Any thoughts on the direction of SAE Fraternity
Heard Brad Cohen spent 10k+ on lawyers to figure out a way to change up the organization without going through the due process. Completely changed everything i.e. no pledging Then proceed, months ago, to have some sort of public mental break down. Very embarrassing. What should I think? What's going to happen? Phi Alpha
As a fellow greek - I speak for everyone on this forum when I say this isn't TFM. So get the fuck out with that.

Any OU folks or SAE people want to speak to the video?
How common is this in the SAE?
You can't really draw any parallels between a fraternity chapter in one school vs. another (for example, say, OU SAE vs. UT SAE).
true... but fraternities across chapters do share similar activities and rituals ...
would you be surprised if schools within close proximity of OU did the same thing?
I'm greek alum and there was never anything like this ever went down the entire time I was actively involved. I also had friends in SAE from all different backgrounds and never heard anything like this occurring. However, I didn't go to school in that part of the country but I know Greek life is much different down there. Most fraternity's were founded in the South a long time ago by white males...including SAE. Given this fact, I would bet that the deplorable chant they were singing was created a long time ago and hopefully not a reflection of their thoughts and ideals. Nevertheless, even if it was part of that chapters tradition, they should have never carried it on and never sang it. I just don't know how dumb you can be to sing something like that in front of other people and not think someone might film or record it. Regardless, they were caught and now they and the entire organization is paying for it dearly.
I'm taking an African American ethnic studies class and the teachers husband is SAE lmao
shit's been stuck in my head all day. fucking CNN
I feel like this comment is under appreciated.
Fucking mind blowing that this has turned into such a big issue.
I mean, I'm really not surprised. I know exactly the sort of attitude the MSM has toward Greek Life and they love to pounce on stuff like this.
Whats disappointing to me is that if it had been any other group of students it would be written off as college kids just messing around. And thats exactly how it should be chalked up even though its members of a fraternity. I guarantee none of those kids are actually racist, and the song sounds like something that was passed down and written dozens of years ago.
Plus, I can't actually seem to wrap my head around how they thought it'd be a good idea to sing that song on what looks like a bus to a formal event. Oh yeah, nothing gets girls panties' wetter than a hearty racism tune.
Don't get me wrong I'm not defending them. Its an absolutely disgusting video, and by far the worst explicit display of racism I've ever seen by a fraternity.
I'm just saying the song probably wasn't written by them, and I don't think it was sung out of malice or actual racial hate. To me it looks like they're all drunk and just started singing one of the old fraternity songs. Its inexcusable and shouldn't have happened, and further more that song should have been buried and not taught to new members.
If it were just a random group of college kids from Oklahoma, this would not have made it to national news. Or at least it would have been over by now. Every time a fraternity does something racist it ends up on the front page. I think the most recent incident before this was a bunch of people losing their heads that a sorority held an indian themed date party.
So perhaps frat members should stop doing these sorts of racist things?
And maybe frats will start (if they aren't already) including programs in their member education along the lines of "in this age of smartphones, don't do this sort of dumb-arsery, either because you shouldn't be a dumb arse or because you'll fuck up the frat"?
I still don't understand how you can say the kids aren't racist. They are very comfortable throwing around racist terms. At the very least the kids are complete pussies who wouldn't stand up for what is right......those people still wouldn't have been singing. More likely they prefer to not be around black people. It's not like it's a stretch to assume that.
I think they thought it was funny, I really do. More than likely they are also complete pussies like you say. I'm not saying they're angels, but variations of this happen all the time in those orgs. There is just a lot of trust that things like that wont be recorded and leaked, and the fact that this was leaked leads me to believe someone wanted to bring attention to it but remained quiet.
I have plenty of friends from OU and I just have a hard time wrapping my head around people there being THAT racist since I've never gotten that impression. They're not a down south SEC Greek Life which is where you'll find the actual racism.
It happens all the time? Well, thank Christ someone finally recorded this and publicised it so frats can start learning not to do it all the time.
To say these guys are not actually racist is laughable. During some point during the initiation process someone used a racist chant and each member decided to participate anyway. At some point during life there racist chants were used and they decided to stay and associate with these people.
One other issue this brings up is why does everyone in the fraternity feel that it's ok to just do whatever it is that others are doing? This is the sort of mindless behavior that is disgusting about fraternities. Universities are generally thought of as places that are designed to promote independent thought and here we have a large number of campus organizations that promote following the herd. If a firm made a concious decision to never hire someone from a fraternity, I would easily understand why. Even the 'good' ones that aren't havens for date rape and racism are still, at their core, places that promote the herd mentality.
Wut
Every few years the country seems to get it's panties all tied up in knots over fraternities, vilifies them, wants to take them down and then it all goes away by the following summer. Then five years later it happens again. I'm not saying that hazing kids to death, raping girls or singing Klan chants is good but it seems to pop up on the country's radar every few years.
But, and I was in a fraternity and we were very friendly with SAE (we held joint parties almost exclusively, had mixers with them and sororities, basically ran a couple of bars together), they were pretty harsh. I went to school in the northeast and probably half their brothers were Jewish and there were a few black brothers so I doubt they were singing racist chants but they hazed the shit out of their pledges, and not in fun and light hearted ways: I'm talking they literally beat the shit out of them, did the ice bath thing, made them drink deadly amounts of liquor (I'm not a pussy, but making an 18 year old finish off half a gallon of booze generally seems like a bad idea)-basically everything you read about when pledges die. They were also known as the date rape house and the advice was that girls shouldn't go above the first floor.
Like I said, I was good friends with them and I'm still friends with a few guys nearly 20 years later, but SAE seemed like it checked most of the boxes that the general public would define as a stereotypical fraternity in the bad way, and from what I can tell it's not that different at most chapters. I'm not saying they're all bad but I was surprised they never killed a pledge or got busted for rape or any number of things when I was in school.
fucking flyover country rednecks
So, you're saying we're better off without Greek Life as it's a social crutch for wannabees?
No I think Greek Life has more than enough positives to stay around. The experience is what people make of it. Some will use it as a social crutch and some will use it as a platform to do great things from.
I'm a pretty politically incorrect person and I accept that everyone has prejudices, but what these guys were chanting was so over the top that it even made my right-wing cheeks blush. Good Lord. I mean, if you want to be racist fine, whatever. But to talk about lynching people? Where does this kind of hatred even come from? That's not even prejudice--that's straight up klansmen sh*t. Maybe one of the few speech-based expulsions I could favor.
In most instances of racism, it stems from ignorance, or just flat out not being around the group.
But I'm pretty sure they've interacted with SOME black people on campus...
These dudes dont have the excuse of ignorance. They havent been chilling in the depths of east Texas or some back woods Georgia city..
I think what gets swept under the rug is that there are SEVERAL SAE dudes who have been passing this song down for years. This isnt generational ... 20 years can see 5 full classes of SAE greeks come through...
That's a LOT of people who sing this song (and probably feel strongly about it)...
And you release these guys into the workplace. That's a terrible thing to envision.
Kinda funny how black frats exist which actually use racism outwardly to recruit members of their own race. I guess that's just a good institution because it promotes "diversity".
I'm so tired of this shit. This is not a big story whatsoever. I think it's a shame that the entire OU SAE chapter had to be punished because one drunk kid said something off color and was recorded. As usual when something goes wrong somewhere the entire fraternity system is under attack e.g. Rolling Stone UVA article
The fraternity system is one of the biggest targets of the liberal media. As a university organization consisting primarily of white males it makes for a perfect villain.
I'm going to have to disagree here. If you watch the video it's clearly a GROUP of people singing this song--not just one drunk kid who happened to be on camera. He was just one of the unlucky ones caught. When you see something like that and don't react like the school/media did, that's supporting institutionalized racism. I have no proof of this, but it probably isn't a long shot to say the this song was passed down from class to class. If you think that it's ok as long as it doesn't reach the public eye--then you're a racist...plain and simple. You can't use 'a bunch of drunk college kids' as an excuse, because in no universe is this kind of behavior acceptable. As someone who was in a fraternity, I agree that it is a large target of the liberal media. However, a fair amount of these stories you hear have very justified reactions.
what ways do black frats use racism ?
There are white guys in majority black frats, as is vice versa...
You just dont hear them talking about hanging white folks from a tree and they'll never be able to join them...
And spare me that "oh, white males are such targets... it's hard being a white male" bullshit sob story, bruh. That is so lame. Smh.
Shifting the problem to something else instead of looking at the issue in your face..
