Any tips on networking over the summer while interning in NY?

I'm a rising junior at a Non-target and interning in NYC. I'd really appreciate if anyone can give me some tips on how to network in NYC for IB over the summer. I'm interning in Finance at CPG (companies like P&G, Unilever, Kering.) I'm trying to get into BB. Should I focus on networking or work hard and get a return offer from my current company?

Agree with others - work hard & also network alot.

Yes, people have time to grab coffee for 20 mins even if they are super busy!

I would consider targeting Consumer & Retail at all banks given your summer experience.

I recruited from a non-target as well and was able to get several offers in NYC so it is totally achievable. The first step is having a crisp story and a solid resume. Treat every networking meeting as if it was a interview.

Check out my networking posts here and here and which might be helpful.

I would advise against targeting a certain group. Cast a wide net and network, being a non-target doesnt allow you to be picky. When I first started networking, I targeted groups and had limited calls/coffee chat, your goal right now is to get an interview you can focus on groups once you actually get an offer. Thats just my opinion as a non target who is interviewing at every bank except the top 3 ebs.

Good point. Casting a wide net is always a good idea, ie don’t go after just the “top banks.” However, I personally believe my efforts were particularly successful because I knew exactly what I was interested in and think that helped me differentiate myself vs other candidates. I had a very focused effort and knew the in’s and out’s of that particular sector / team. Could see merits in both strategies!

Thank you so much for your advice. I'm starting to set up phone calls and coffee chats. I was wondering how to convert those Info interviews into a referral given that I don't have much time left in the recruiting cycle.
