Well from what you've stated your qualis look good to me. Going through online apps, luck is also involved to a certain extent and I don't think that your background warrants a rejection per se. Did you apply in time? Maybe you should have cast your net wider. Then make sure to spell check your apps.

Your citizenship won't be an issue: there are lots of Chinese/Asian kids in LDN in FO roles. Nevertheless, I would also apply to HK or China

You can work full-time during vacations while your UK student visa is valid. Also, I think your English isn't very fluent, get a friend to proof-read your CV and Covering Letter before you send them out. Also, I think you should have mentioned in your Cover Letter or somewhere on the application form that you are a penultimate year student. Why did you apply to only 5 internships? I remember applying to atleast 15-20 last year.

Do you go to the LSE per chance? I know they have some tie up with Tsinghua University..

Some comments: - leave out secondary school bit - what happened between September 2011 and July 2013? - include ROI on spread trading - Investing section looks weak, I'd recommend leaving it out - formatting in general needs to improve - interests section - only non-finance stuff

  1. USA internships have no testing, just questions.
  2. Both, as it depends. If you want a job go to MDs But still ask analyst and associates as to the type of work they do. Ultimately, you will be working with them (doesn't mean they will answer truthfully). Yet, the MDs get you the jobs as well as the interviews.
  3. Contact MDs and read the Networking Like a Ninja Guide. I got some meeting by contacting secretaries.

@peat:

1) You still go through online, however you are flagged if someone is pulling for you. I got interviews at one of the BB's when i was interviewing simply because I impressed someone, I still had to submit my app though.

@acs_london:

UBS does recruiting extremely early for SA compared to other banks, and a lot of kids have fast tracks from spring weeks. A lot of summer recruiting occurs Jan/Feb as well.

Hi, thanks for your posts.

I have applied to 9 BBs for IBD already, as well as Rothschild, Blackstone, Jefferies, Cornell Partnership people, and a few others. Now, I am moving onto PWP, Moelis, Greenhill, Evercore, Gleacher, and probably hammering on some less well known boutiques as backups. I might also try and get a few weeks doing VC/PE, as that is my potential final goal.

Speaking of which -- anyone know anything about LDC (Lloyds Development Capital) ? Haven't heard much about them here..

Also, the general consensus is that I should wait until after new years to start hassling people, correct?

Best wishes

Your list of applications sounds good, and the advice so far has been pretty spot on. One important thing about networking in the UK is that you can talk about your contacts in interviews. I have interviewed with a lot of the firms you listed, so pm me if you have specific questions.

Lubyanka:
How do you apply to Moelis London? On the website (http://www.moelis.com/careers/submitApplication.php) is only a NY address. Same question for Jefferies.

Thx & good luck guys

For Moelis, send your CV and Covering Letter to [email protected] before 15th January (That's the deadline stated in their ad on my uni's Careers Service website; I'd email ASAP if I was you)

The good thing about the UK is that everyone applies through the online system, unlike the on campus stuff you find in the US. However, you are still at a disadvantage vs target unis but just not as much. I went to a non target in the UK and I was offered interviews at 4 BB banks for S&T summer internship through the online app. So if you are a strong candidate and have a strong CV that shows this, you do have a shot.

He's not a strong candidate. Sorry to be harsh OP, but this is the reality. Cover letters count for shit. Get part-time work during the year.

So how much does networking influence hiring in the UK (vs. US)? If I go on several informal interviews, will this increase my chances of getting an interview as much as if I would do this in the US?
