Any undergrads hear from some of the top prop shops yet?
Hey guys I'm a Junior at a semi-target (Ivy but not Harvard/Wharton) and have received many first rounds at some pretty good prop shops (SIG, Optiver, TMG, Citadel, Chicago etc.) and was wondering if anyone on the site has heard from any of the other top places, specifically Jane Street Capital, DE Shaw, DRW. I feel like I am a good candidate (and have made it already to several final rounds) so I feel like I would have a good shot to make at least a first round at some of the places I just mentioned. My understanding was that they tend to interview a lot of people in the first round, but I am worried that it is already a little bit late in the process and maybe I did not make the cut without being informed. Anyone hear back from them yet for trader positions? Would appreciate any feedback or info about the process from applicants or employees!
Thanks!
For full time traders I heard DRW is done of hiring its class. Also I think JSC and DE Shaw hire traders through all of the year. Not sure about the interns though since you are a junior.
Several friends have had superdays at DE Shaw over the past few weeks. But as stated above they hire throughout the year (along with Jane Street). Others likely follow traditional timelines conforming to OCR.
I've only heard from SIG. Did they ever give you a java quiz?
No I did not get a Java quiz at SIG but I applied for trading not software. Oddly enough just heard from Jane Street saying they are conducting OCR next semester which is why I wasn't contacted yet. Anyone else hear? DRW? DE Shaw?
It depends on what school you go to. If the bulk of your OCR happens next semester and career services do not allow recruiting/offers to occur until then, then you should be fine.
Yeah I agree but not all of the places recruit on my campus (DRW) and was just wondering if people from outside of their target schools have contacted them about recruiting. I know that for other places that I have heard from where my school is not considered one of their 4-5 targets I have already been interviewing whereas Im sure they will not go to OCR for their targets until maybe Jan/Feb
Nvm, I misread my email. It wasn't SIG but some unknown fund with a similar name.
Well the DRW resume drop deadline isn't until mid January if that helps
For folks at my school, Jane Street first round happened last week, DRW first round happening last week and next.
What school do you go to?
Sent you a PM.
Any idea how many college seniors DRW and Jane hire in a typical year?
Heard DRW hired 16 trading analysts. No idea about JSC but guess it will be similar.
16 seems like a lot. DRW is one of the few prop trading firms I respect. Them and Jump are consistently kicking ass from what I've heard.
DRW hired 16? They only had one superday this year and there were only around 35 kids there.
The thing I heard for prop shops is that they don't hire all of their juniors from a single superday (At least my firm doesn't). There are one or two big superdays for the kids from the OCR, and there would be mini on-site interviews for other online applicants with the size less than 10.
And if you go to UChicago/Northwestern/Depaul/IIT/UIC you don't need a superday.
a lot of this information is false...
what specifically?
the 2 comments above mine and numbers seem off
I have heard back from SIG and they say plan on hiring 10-12 interns. Just to give a number that might be similar to other top props. Jane Street had a total about 40 interns last summer (but that includes software, trading, ops, etc.)
10-12 trading interns, or interns overall? (They have software and ops at the least)
Also, anybody know how many more super days they'll be having? They already had some...
When I interviewed with SIG my senior year in college for full-time jobs they extended around 12-15 offers. Great shop although their location sucks. From what I've seen the traders who work there get better exit opps than the Chicago prop traders. Not sure why this is the case.
Just trading.
I've noticed a similar trend. A lot of the newer prop shops are started by former SIG traders. Might have something to do with their amazing educational program for their new hires (and to a lesser extent, but still great, interns)
For SIG superdays, I know they're having atleast two in January.
