Anyone ever drive Uber for fun money?

Was at the airport dropping off my buddy and was heading back to the city. For shits and giggles, I had the Uber app for drivers but never drove. I pulled it up and saw a fare for $35. I didn't do it because I felt like it was weird having some stranger sit in my car that I am supposed to transport. I didn't grow up with much money and most of my life was penny pinching, but honestly I felt like it was dumb to not just take the money as I was going in that direction. I understand jobs like this are "beneath" several people here given the forum, but there are also many people on here that know the true value of earning every dollar.

I always recommend people to do this if they need the money. and one of my friends is a gov intelligence analyst (they dont get paid too much), I suggested he get a bike and do deliveroo so he could exercise and get paid - he pooh-pooh'ed the idea.

but this reminds me, I found an app that send you on 'missions' like a secret shopper... so it shows me jobs in the area and a price for the job - example job - go to the local pharmacy and take picture of X,Y and Z aisles. payment was like £9. I totally forgot to do it, but I was heading that way to do my grocery shopping anyway, so I would've done it if I remembered.

You’re probably clean (don’t smell, no skin fungus) and don’t have a felony, so you think passengers will be similar. There are too many videos of ghetto girls gon’ wild in the backseat threatening their Uber driver to make it “fun.”

I drove for Postmates in college for some beer money and have considered doing uber a few times since graduating for extra fun money now, but never ended up at the conclusion it would be worth it for me for a few reasons.

I drive a BMW 328i, not crazy nice, but plenty of upgrades that make it much nicer than what a typical uber would be so I don't really want the wear and tear from the passengers as well as the extra mileage on the car. On top of that I have larger than standard sized wheels and the low profile tires wear like no other. If I drove something like a honda civic it'd make a little more sense. Another reason I never ended up doing it was because I felt that the few hours I'd spend driving would be better spent either sharpening modeling or related skills as well as more time to network.

Good way to make some short term cash, but wear and tear on car and time spent focusing on things other than my career did not seem worth it.

I did it for a hot minute right out of college when I just got a new car and had dreams of paying it off within 12 months. I thought I'd use my Uber money to make extra payments. I did maybe....5 rides overall? I got worried about safety (I'm a petite woman), and I realized I needed to drive more than I was willing to do in order to make enough money. Also, I was dating someone richer than me at the time, and I was scared I'd get matched with him or his friends.

If you're a driver in major cities, it could be a good way to make money now, especially since there's a shortage. But not sure how big of a cut Uber takes nowadays.

If you really need the cash I'd say go for it. But if you don't, I might explore some other options. From the people I know who've done Uber as a side hustle, they didn't exactly love it or feel like it was worth the time. Plus the whole weirdness of random strangers and drunks in your personal vehicle.
