Career Resources
I usually spend a good amount of time there per year, lived there for a while, and will be moving back in about a year... Are you in Honolulu?
Don't have much to offer as far as "contacts" on the island and whatnot. Ive heard there's some private equity out there, as well as a few hedge funds and some good PWM... Don't know much about IB out there, though.
From Hawaii, but not in Hawaii. Not the best place to start a career in finance, but I'm sure there's a way to make it work. If you're interested in a career as a beach bum however, Hawaii is very target.
Where'd you end up settling down? Grad from Shidler (CBA prior to that)?
In San Francisco. Miss the beach to death at times, but am otherwise very happy with the Bay Area.
What is Shidler and CBA? I'm not from Oahu so that can likely explain why I'm unfamiliar with those terms.
I'm from Hawaii and graduated from Shidler.
^^ Go on......
The MFE program looks cool.
I believe they're killing the MFE program due to lack of participation... Too bad too, great professors...
Guess I can't be much help. I graduated in 2010 with degrees in finance and management. Graduated from St. Louis school way back in the early 2000's.
I work at a public finance consulting firm in California. The firm sets up special districts and administers them for the government. We work with developers and manage bond issuance and debt service obligations. It's ok. Public finance is cool. I just started. Before this I was in the military. I don't get paid much at entry level but it's enough to get by and probably what most non target kids get.
Hey HawaiiAnalyst,
If you don't mind me asking, what's the name of the firm? Would love to hear how you made the transfer out of the islands. Lmk bro!
I don't really want to say the name of the firm, Sorry.
But anyways, I got out of Hawaii because I was transferred for the military. I relocated from the south east to San Diego once I finished my time in the military. My best advice I could give for relocating off island, or really anywhere, is find a place with family near by that would let you use their residence for their resume.
When I was moving to San Diego I applied for almost 100 jobs with no calls. As soon as I put my in-laws address down on my apps (they live in Socal) I got three calls in a week. Employers are weary about hiring people from across the country (at entry level, and in my experience) for whatever reasons.
As for Shidler, I know a couple grads who worked with their internships and asked when they received an offer if they could go to an off island office. I know one girl who works for KPMG in Orange County now and a few others who moved off island.
I am from Oahu, but recently moved off island to attend school. It is unfortunate that there are not many great opportunities in Hawaii unless you're part Hawaiian and work managining the investments for Kamehameha.
Unfortunately, you're spot on.
I'm from HI and UH. Nice to meet you.
Anyone know of commercial real estate firms operating or have offices in Honolulu?
Here are a Couple Coastalrim Alexanderbaldwin SCD
I live here full time there are many other companies that develop out here but aren't based in Hawaii.
