Anyone switched sectors as a senior analyst?
Has anyone successfully switched sectors as a senior analyst? I've been covering one sector for 10 years, and have done 6 of those on the buy side. Space has had a lot of consolidation and the investable universe has become both small and extremely correlated which makes it hard to invest in. Realistically I'd need to leave my current fund (multi manager) to swtich but not sure how realistic it is to think another fund would take a risk on someone that's never covered the sector.
Any advice or thoughts?
I was hired into a sr analyst role and was assigned sector I had never followed. I know of people that have bounced around sectors as well. I'd imagine its dependent on the PM / firm. In some respects I think there are benefits to changing sectors every once in a while. Clearly there are drawbacks as well.
Would you care to share what you have been covering?
surely the better option is to broaden your coverage? If you want to stay in the MM model switching to a completely different sector probably not feasible. Also, its hard to imagine a whole sector becoming so strongly correlated.
If you want to change because you're bored with the sector then that's a different matter. Depends on whether you can afford a pay cut and also the risk of joining another group, assuming your current one is doing well and the payout is good from the PM.
