Apartment Internet Solutions

Have heard that wi-fi and internet solutions are tough in high rise apartment complexes. Curious if any of you monkey's live on a high floor in an apartment complex and what you use for internet solutions. I do not want to buy cable, I just need fast enough internet for web surfing and a pleasant Netflix viewing experience.

All input and previous experiences are appreciated!

Why would it be tough? I've never heard this, they run a cable to the apartment buildings and then you plug the wireless router into the cable jack. Where is the issue?

Also, not sure if you are aware but cable and internet come through the same cable.... unless its like Verizon FiOs.

Not sure, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to wireless/connectivity type stuff. I have called two local internet providers and they said anything above the 5th floor in apartment buildings is shaky in terms of losing connection, etc. (at least with them). Maybe I just picked two poor providers?

Regardless, anyone have any insight as to their internet solutions? Some recommendations on providers, speeds, bandwidth, cost/month, etc. would be great.

The only thing that you deal with in regards to living in apartment situations is your routers signal getting mixed with others.

Your typical router uses a 2.4gHz band. Pretty much everyone around you will be on this so all of their wireless routers are broadcasting their wireless internet through yours so there is a lot of interference which causes your speeds to drop and sometimes even drop connections.

You can get a better router that uses a dual band that broadcasts both the 2.4gHz and a 5.0 gHz band. The 5.0gHz band isn't as common as the routers are more expensive so you'll have less interference with other routers so your speeds will pick up and you won't drop your connection.

The downsides to the 5.0gHz band is that it doesn't go through walls as easy and not all devices can use it so you'll be stuck on the 2.4 band with those.

This is also the same reason that some people notice is that in places like NYC if you're closer to the middle of the building, a person with a verizon phone and a person with an att phone could be standing next to each other, the verizon phone will get better reception because they operate on a lower band.

As far as provider goes, are you already in your apartment or are you still looking for an apartment and just came up with these questions? Because usually depending on your building you are fairly limited in your choices. Usually only 1 or two providers will be able to provide internet/cable service to you.

This is the table that Netflix lays out for their recommended download speeds for streaming.

High Definition Content Quality Level DVD HD SUPER HD 3D Internet Speed (in Mbps) 3.0 5.0 7.0 12.0

So for your purposes, I wouldn't get anything with slower download speeds than 10Mbps. Carriers aren't really doing much about bandwidth usage as of yet so you shouldn't have to worry about that either. Cost per month for a faster internet connection as the base speeds are usually around 1-3 Mbps, will be ~50 dollars a month after fees and taxes and what not.

Hopefully this doesn't confuse you at all.
