Has Apollo always taken summers for their PE? Anyone have info on previous internship offers/conversion/etc.? Or is this a new thing they just started doing?
They hire only for summer, never do FT recruiting. They explicitly say that we wont give a FT offer at the end of the summer. A friend of mine worked in their Strategic Value Fund and regretted that decision. Their is no proper structured program and he was saying that he would have rather done banking at a top BB which he had an offer from rather than going to Apollo.

damn...that sucks. Why would Apollo even bother with summer interns then?

I just wrote something similar on another thread so ill copy paste that.
I agree what manuarsenal said is a possibility.
However, I go to a top school and two people I personally know have gone to Apollo, one went to BX FT and the other went to MS FT. I am not quite sure what other offers they had exactly during the summer, but it paid off pretty well.
I think most people in the industry realize that Apollo doesnt give out FT offers to SA and take that into consideration. Just working there adds greatly to your credibility.
What if you already have an SA offer from BX/MS/GS? Is there any benefit in going to Apollo, when all you'd be doing is decreasing your chances of landing a FT offer at one of those top firms?
I know BX takes some undergrad interns but I didn't know about Apollo taking any. I just saw that they had a posting on my school's career services site.
The posting is for Apollo's PE and Capital Markets groups. I know Apollo is well reputed for PE but how are its hedge funds, esp. mezzanine and distressed?
Posting doesn't mention AINV so I don't know. The Capital Markets Operation blurb just says that they have $13.2 B spread out over ten capital markets vehicles and the different strategies/assets being covered.
I'm a sophomore so definitely not expecting anything for this summer - just trying to find out more info. for when I do apply for summer 2010.
I guess they're taking interns now because they're having a hard time recruiting.
They got really, really lucky that they raised their latest fund before the markets sank. Their last fund is going to make no return. in fact, I think the firm is in danger of blowing up...

Apollo closed a fund in December 2008 @$15bn so not sure what the "before markets sank" refers to...
agree on Fund VI tanking, i heard the IRR was down to 20% but this was in mid-'08... and they did take a hit on Huntsman-Hexion with a $700m break-up fee in Q3'08...
is the closest to the big explosion. again, if you can get an undergrad internship at any of these places though, it would probably look good on a resume. they are still respected.
I'd say Apollo internship is tops.. over any BB internship.
Considering IBD guys are trying to get over to the buyside/PE... an internship at a top PE would be better than an internship at a top BB. Assuming its a legit internship and you're doing interesting work.

My buy-side urges can't ever convince me to jump from my BB to Apollowing :X

How is apollo doing these days? Weren't they really struggling back in 2008/2009?
They dont give offers for FT so no point in doing internship there
dumb
We are talking about summer associate offers for MBA students right?
might as well secure a banking job rather than go into OCR FT with no offer in hand. Thats the worst possible situation. Just my opinion.
no, they took one wharton undergrad for PE last summer.
manuarsenal, how do you know they don't extend FT offers?
Undergrad soph and junior. No FT offers for PE

This has changed. At last last fall, they had at least one analyst join FT from Wharton UG after interning.

APO gave out a FT offer to at least one analyst last year. Summer intern & Wharton UG.
This was from 2011

similar situation with KKR where they give out summer offers but not FT
This has changed. KKR has offered at least two UGs for this coming fall.

Thanks!
although getting an internship at apollo would look pretty good on any resume.
Leon Black is a disciple of Milken; anything in their high yield/distressed area is likely very legit
Their PE portfolio is screwed but apparently they continue to raise new money
would this be working for their BDC?

Apollo is so ****ed. It's kind of ridiculous.

the apollo internship listed at columbia nyu are for the backoffice (finance, ops, treasury, fin reporting, etc.)
i don't know about other schools, but if you're at these 2 schools, just make sure you know you're heading the backoffice
