Apple Unveils iOS 8

Apple introduced iOS 8 today in WWDC '14.

Notable Updates & Additions:

Notification center - It now lets you swipe down to reply immediately to a message without having to open the app.

Mail - You can check other mails in your inbox while you’re in the middle of a draft, and then you can pop right back in to the message you were drafting by tapping at the bottom of the screen.

Keyboard - Apple has added QuickType, which is a new version of the keyboard that supports keyword auto-suggestions to let you autofill quickly. It’s context-sensitive, so it offers up words based on what you’ve already typed and who you are talking with.

Continuity is a new part of Apple’s entire software ecosystem, extending beyond iOS to OS X Yosemite. The phone, iPad and computer will be aware of each other, and while you’re in the middle of a task, you can switch from one device to the next with a simple prompt.
Perhaps the most exciting part is that Continuity extends to phone calls, meaning that you can have your phone plugged in on the other side of the house and pick up a phone call on your Mac, using it as a speakerphone. You can place calls from the Mac, too.

iMessage - Apple has added audio messages. Most importantly, you can set up these audio messages and video messages to self destruct after a certain number of minutes.

Health - It’s a centralized place where many health apps can plug in on the back end so that users can have a single hub for all their health data and services.
On the backend, Apple is calling it HealthKit. But it’s not just developers who can build into HealthKit, but health providers and medical institutions.

Family Sharing is a new feature in iOS 8 that lets you sync up all the devices in a single family (must be tied to one credit card) to automatically share media, calendars, reminders, or find my friends.

Photos - Apple is offering storage for all your photos and videos in the cloud with access to them from any device, similar to the way that iTunes holds all your music and movies.

Siri - You can now activate Siri without touching the phone by simply saying “Hey Siri”.

What do you think about the new iOS 8?

cooldurg:

Is no one else excited about yelling "Hey Siri" in the middle of crowded places?

The type of person who owns an iPhone would get excited about that.

So much Apple hate, I don't get it.

Their products are overpriced shit compared to the competition and people are catching on. They're not a leader in innovation anymore.

K, so don't buy them then? Apple has always sold their products at a premium. Even if there are Android phones (I use an HTC One) that have greater technical capabilities, you will still not find a phone/laptop/tablet anywhere else that are as easy to turn on and use as Apple products.

BankersGoBonkers:

lol wut?! iOS is AMAZING! Apple invented Google Voice with iOS 8. Widgets also. That's unheard of. They really revolutionized the keyboards on smartphones too, with third party keyboard support now available.

Honestly, let's just start by extending the battery life first

Exactly. I'm tired of the battery shitting the bed in less than a year and being forced to replace the phone at $800.

nice thing about some androids is you can replace the battery, even carry a second one!

So, Apple hits a home run with the Ipod. Follows it up with a freaking grand slam in the Iphone and then another home run with the Ipad. The guy who was the driving force behind this entire reshaping of the company's lineup is now gone and not coming back. He left them in either the best position possible (Cash, fantastic product line, zealous fanbase, burgeoning computer sales) or the worst position ever (Impossible to follow up that act, a product that was starting to lose market share, margin erosion on newly introduced products, over saturation of their main markets). Regardless, I think that people have gotten so emotional over Apple they've failed to realize Apple is beginning to behave like a mature company. Stock buybacks, investor placation and growing dividends. It's rational considering that even with all of this they have so much cash it's a joke and why not keep the big investors in while you look for the next big thing.

I think it is telling that they didn't announce anything else this time and are going with the addition of incremental improvements to what they currently have while working on their next major products. It isn't a bad thing that they are taking the next phase slowly. Look, if you were the guy who bought apple back when it was going to 1,000 or whatever I'm sure you are pretty angry right now. Otherwise, let's all calm down a little bit.

The thing that people forget is that this is their developer's conference and it still generates this much hype. Hell, half of the day yesterday was spent showing lines of code on a screen.

This wasn't a product launch, and no one who pays attention was expecting anything groundbreaking this week.

I still like the Iphone after going to an Android. My whole issue with Apple is the clownish cultism people have for their products. All of their products looks slick and have nice interfaces, but shit is way over hyped. Its like a Honda Civic with a body kit being hyped to be a Ferrari competitors.

I am pumped for some of the new Androids coming out. That new Sony Xperia Z2 or whatever and the Samsung. Look great and high powered. Maybe if Iphone 6 is worth a shit I might be tempted to go back, but I think Apple is old news in the phone market. They started it and lead for a long time, but no longer.

People get really upset when you don't like Apple

You think? It kinda seems the opposite to me. ANYTIME an apple product is mentioned (mostly the iPhone), a HUGE Andriod army will come in and start bashing the iPhone like its 10 generations behind. Facebook posts, WSO threads, YouTube comment section, news articles' comment sections, you name it...everywhere an iPhone is mentioned, the Andriod army is right there behind.

I've had iPhone 5S and Galaxy s4 recently. Liked them both. Android phones typically are more customizable while iPhones are typically more simple / easy to use. To each their own. The capabilites are 99% the same though.

But I wouldn't say "People get upset when you don't like Apple." Re-read this thread with an open mind and then tell me which set of people it is with the inferiority complex.

Does anyone actually think that the people who post here are the same nerds who are camping outside 5th ave in December waiting on the latest model?

Apple products are approaching a Justin Bieber polarizing love/hatred. It's ridiculous, if you hate the product buy something else. As for me, until some significant product differentiation appears I'll keep using what I've used for the last 5+ years.
