Application strategy - Graduate seeking IBD role in LDN
Hi guys,
My goal is to break into IBD in London at a reputable bank, be it MM, an internationally recognised boutique or a BB, no small local shops though. My background is the following: BSc in mainland Europe from semi-target. Two DCM internships at two different international banks (think RBC, HSBC, BNP, SocGen) and an M&A internship at a strong boutique. All internships were in mainland Europe. Further, I will start my MSc at LSE/Oxbridge in Fall this year.
I assume that I am not eligible for an SA stint in Summer 2019, am I correct? Should I go for off-cycle internships after finishing the MSc or do I stand a chance to get a FT role without an internship in London? Which banks are known for hiring FT directly?
I appreciate your input. I am sure there are several students from mainland Europe who do their Master's in the UK and aim to break into IB in the UK afterwards.
mooneater, bummer your thread hasn't had a response yet. Sometimes bots are smarter than humans anyways:
Or maybe the following users have something to say: @FeedMeDealFlow" Drising zentiger
Hope that helps.
bump!
I'm in a similar situation, some bank allow you to do SA and then start after January, others no. The best decision is to apply to all (summer, FT and off cycles). FT will depend on your internship experience
Thanks for your reply! When applying for SA, what do you enter as graduation date to not get auto-rejected?
I can do an additional fourth term in order to avoid that problem but I have saw some case where people do 1 yr masters a then start around jan-jul after SA. I saw this in PJT, MS and Citi for example. in my situation I'll try to reach out for alumni analysts and understand which works better, going for SA or FT
Just to clarify, are you graduating from undergrad in Spring 2019 or will you be halfway through your Master's at that point? If you're graduating in spring, then you're not eligible for internships, but if you'll be in a Master's program, then the expectation is that you'd do a summer internship
I'll finish the Master's in summer 2019 in the UK. So youre saying that I am eligible for UK summer internships in the summer of 2019? What do I put as grad date, as they usually want penultimate students?
Hmm. It's a bit of a grey area. You're better positioned for full-time positions than internships, but you could always try applying to both. If you get the interview and do well, they'll work with you to figure something out (a trial internship feeding directly into a FT offer for example). Just put your actual graduation date
Thank you very much for your advice. So putting summer 2019 for summer analyst applications in London won't get me auto-dinged?
I strongly disagree with "PenAndPencils.
It is widely known in the SA application sphere, among post-graduate M.Sc. students, that you must, in some cases, modify the graduation date just so you can make it past the software selection. It is a widely used technique.
Pre-experience M.Sc. graduates are eligible for SA positions. No chance to land a FT position with no prior SA experience. Don't recommend "Graduates" either. Much complicated & difficult path to get in IB.
