So I applied for a banking position on JPM's website. Uploaded my resume and then about 5 hours later I get an email telling me after 'careful' consideration I have not been selected to interview. Does that seem lightning quick to anyone?
I recently finished my MBA and have a CPA as well. No previous banking experience but I know guys in IB that never had any finance experience but made the transition after MBA.

On the bright side, you at least got a response. Online applications are technically a black hole at those BBs, so the fact that you got a rejection shows you atleast passed the initial screen. I have never applied to JPM online, do they send out an email to everyone if they got rejected?
I guess that's one way to think of it. I was shocked to see the position referenced in an email since I had already received the "thank you for applying for ______" email only hours earlier.

is you MBA from NYU? I have been rejected like that in the past. I used to think it was some automated system that rejects you for something silly like a GPA or so. But recently, I was rejected by a very small firm 6 hours after applying. I am pretty sure someone at the small firm actually read my resume.
I wish there were some recruiters who answered these questions anonimously (sp?). Anyhow, I once approached someone at an event after I had been rejected and sent the person my resume after they asked for it. I finally got rejected a second time, but at least someone read it the second time around.
No it might just be the case of have experienced candidates applying as well. Thats what is horrible about these online applications, for one job, there are hundred of applicants and they have to narrow down to just a few. So you pretty much have to have an insane resume just to make it pass initial screening.
Sorry to tell you this but nobody had a look at your resume.
Your application was most probably rejected by an automated algorithm and the text of your rejection email is just the standard text that they send to everybody who didn't make it through to the first round.
How could an algorithm evaluate someone's work history, arguably the most important thing on an app/resume? I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to auto-ding for a really low GPA (or any disqualifying parameter), but that just seems absurdly lazy to me.
Send them an email. Usually this means you had some box checked that they didn't like and it was an automatic rejection by a computer ie. sophomore, gpa below 3.5, no referral, etc. A friend of mine was automatically dinged and ended up getting a job at the place. This is particularly true if you had a referral, let them know.
This happened to me last year- I had a good referral and everything, and after applying I received a rejection email within half an hour (I also applied at like 9:30pm). I was a sophomore and their program was strictly for juniors.
Yeah, I'm skeptical of the reliance on algorithms for experienced positions... The HR dept at large banks is usually staffed well enough where they have the capacity to at least view inbound resumes and use personal discretion whether or not to escalate the candidate.
In your case there are too many variables to speculate why you were dinged. It could be the lack of experience or maybe they have already progressed the search process past the point of screening first round candidates. Unfortunately, an MBA doesn't guarantee that you'll get a serious consideration.
