Approaching a Company
Just wanted to hear what people think/personally did when they tried to approach smaller/mid-size HF and PE firms that did not have a career section. Do you just call up? If so what do you say? Do you just send a random email? Etc.
Start at the top...work your way down.
So start at the MD level? Over the associate level? How long until you drop down a tier? Also, how do you approach the email?
Address a CV and covering letter (printed on good quality paper) to the most senior person at the firm (Founder/Portfolio Manager etc) and post it to the firm's offices (address almost always on a website otherwise find it through regulatory filings). Don't forget to sign the letter by hand. Follow up with a call if you don't hear back within a couple of weeks of the letter's arrival. Works for me anyway.
So a mail is better than an email?
