make sure you are as far away as possible from the "L" track as those trains will shake your apartment and are obnoxiously loud...as for the buses i know they are hybrid but im not sure about the garbage trucks

haha is this a serious question? i hear fire engines are the worst?! lol, ya, don't live near the freeway, I hear cars make noise. try to avoid living near a pet store b/c doggies make noise when they bark. This is definitely the toughest decision that you will have to make, so please, continue to post 5 topics about it. good luck with your dilemma...

Being by a firehouse is definitely obnoxious, the engines are extremely loud. The train on the other hand isn't as bad as long as your building isn't immediately next to the tracks. The further from the train you live potentially the further walk you have in the morning/night. I would say living above a bar can be worse than living next to the train.

PnL, it's fucking annoying when you have some important shit to do in the day ahead, and the garbage trucks rolls down your street, and it makes a whole crapload of noise. The funny thing is, when I was a SA in NY, the garbage truck rolled by when there wasn't even any garbage to pick up.

Maybe I should drag around a toilet to show people that I AM THE SHIT.

I completely agree tardbit. It took me 7 months to find a solid place in NY for the summer because I wanted to avoid any place near the subways, food vendors, people, clubs, dogs, cats, homeless, and of course the awful awful garbage trucks. I take it you lived by yourself throughout college. good luck working on the trading floor, there are no distractions there either.

So, there are a number of things that make a shit ton of noise in chicago. However, the one I never have worried about (although I didn't worry in NYC either) is garbage trucks.

Things that are loud and you should worry about, as opposed to fire trucks (unless you live across the street from a station): -The El -Highways -Major Streets -College Bars -Criminal activity

In conclusion, just move into a nice neighborhood and don't live anyplace you wouldn't in any other city.
