Are people who go into banking pre-MBA typically much more impressive than those who go post-MBA?

Honestly, who cares?
From a prestige/brand perspective (what most of WSO cares about), I would say yes...pre-MBA bankers more impressive than post-MBA bankers.
But from a raw skills/talent point of view, IMO, it's kinda comparing apples and oranges. Many post-MBA bankers were not bankers/financiers/wall-streeters beforehand. So you end up comparing the 3.8 GPA Econ Dartmouth Pre-MBA banker vs. the 3.6 GPA UC-Berkeley Engineer Post-MBA banker (with top ~16 MBA). Who's more impressive...I have no clue. I'm overgeneralizing here, but you get the point.
It seems I've spawned a thread...
Also creepy that your hypothetical credentials for the pre-MBA and post-MBA are pretty spot on.
I do not have much experience, but I would say that you cannot compare those two, but definitely pre-MBA bankers younger started to have interest for IB world
