Are US target good to land summer internship in U.K.?
International student at US target (NYU,ROSS,UVA) about to recruit for 2022 SA, giving current conditions I’m really considering recruiting for U.K., and I was what my chances are? Is it hard to recruit for U.K. from the US? I have a strong gpa and 2 good internship.
Thanks a lot!
I've seen a few Stern kids in London, although they were all Europeans. So I guess if you're from the UK/EU, it's doable. Don't know about Ross or UVA though
Does 'European' just refer to citizenship/right to work? I'm in a similar position but LinkedIn seems to indicate a really weak presence in the UK, especially from ugrad.
Thank you! Do you know how important is networking for U.K. compared to the US?
Networking isn’t important in the UK
So it just resume and cover letter? Wow that’s rough
As well as the psychometric tests
Is some networking expected or not at all?
You can just to be able to answer “why our firm” and improve your cover letter (which I doubt anyone reads), but unless you know a MD it’s not going to land you an interview
Pretty much everyone seems to have some connection to Europe. I haven't seen any pure American kids do it besides one who got a referral from a top MD.
Connection like family or connection at the bank that helps getting the job?
I think he means connection to Europe like being from there or going to school there, not connection to a European.
Know a non-European international from HYP who did this. If you network really hard, you should find something good though my guess is as good as yours. can you pm me btw
Hey can you pm me? you're private
If you are serious about UK, Better path is to do a top masters at Oxford/Cambridge/LSE (at least that’s what I did and had an easy time recruiting)
>99% of people in the UK have never heard of any of the universities you’ve listed and network is not remotely useful for SA positions.
If you’re not HYP, you’re not a “target” for the UK.
I've actually seen a few Georgetown/Stern/Columbia kids interning in European IB, sounds like it's not only HYP. Don't know about possible connections / UK passport tho.
Was in your exact position -- HYP non-EU international and got an offer from a US BB for London office. However, I did live in the UK (no passport though) and I speak a European language fairly well. I think having a reason as to why you wanna do London is important, especially if there's no obvious connection (otherwise they'll assume it's your backup option after not succeeding in NYC) and an extra European language is always a boost -- one of my interviews was done in that language.
if networking was not key, what did you do to succeed?
I did network with a handful of my school's alums who were in London purely to get a better idea of recruiting there and not necessarily for referrals (I did end up getting some referrals though). Basically do what you did for the US but tailor it to the UK. Online tests matter more, hirevues matter more, you'll have to write cover letters or essays to 'competency questions' for a lot of them. Also remember to tailor your resume to your audience - don't use letter size paper, convert your GPA to the UK system, I even used British spelling. Attention to detail pays off.
Once you get to the Assessment Center, the Superday equivalent, you need to know technicals + general business knowledge since case studies are much harder to do if you've been just memorizing answers using BIWS.
Other than that same thing applies - be likeable, follow up etc.
Double down on US recruiting and go for boutiques and lateral later versus applying internationally. Broaden your application base by quality of banks in US, not international geography.
You do not want to be doing banking in London > US, and it’s likely you’ll get something in the US if you are networking and applying to as many banks as possible.
Yeah but for international London is an easier place to get visas
