Are you ashamed to come out of a country where people vote for Sarah Palin??

First of all, with the following I don't want to provoke anybody or be an asshole, I am just interested.

We all know how Americans are proud to be born and raised or to live in the US.
I agree, national pride is great and the US is a great country.
As a European, when I was younger, I have always seen America as the place to be.

Nevertheless, there is a certain demographic segment that is quite overproportionally represented in the US compared to Europe. There is a whole bunch of people in the society who were never taught to really think their own thoughts, to be interested what happends in the world and to differ between wrong and right (at least to understand what is globally accepted as wrong and right).

It might be your rather simple school system that promotes a few but leaves the majority with a rather "simple" state of mind, or some other reason I have not yet experienced.

I mean come on, there are actually people voring for sarah palin? People attending "restoring honour" (on the day of the I have a dream speach?)? People being in favour of the tea party?

My question basically comes down to this:
Since you want to pursue banking which requires quite a high level of academical qualification, I assume you are smart and well-educated persons interested in international affairs and the such-like.
Are you guys embarassed by a certain demographic segment in your country?

Every country has populations like that. Stupidity is not a uniquely American thing. To think that is a quite common, pompous European thing though and makes you look like a dumbass. If your school system taught you to think critically rather than in a simple matter, you'd probably understand that.

I lived in Europe for a while, went to a public high school there, all that jazz. There are plenty of equally stupid people there. The thing is that the media tends to not focus on those people as much, while here the media culture tends to focus on those who are the loudest (ie Palin), which will inherently lean towards having a lot of stupid people out in the public. Europe doesn't have this as much and also tends to try to squash such groups. You can look to the numerous Muslim riots throughout all parts of Europe as an example of that. Even recently European countries have even gone to the extent to exporting the 'unwelcomed' portion of their communities (see Romas in France)

I am ashamed to live in a country that is supposedly a proponent of freedom and self directed destiny, but is now becoming a socialistic nanny state.

FYI just because we are smart in one area doesn't mean we are smart in every area. I think there is a lot of stupidity, but I wouldn't call the anti tax, less government sentiment that is growing in this country stupid or foolish.

It always amuses me how liberal idiots mistake degrees and eloquence for intelligence, or better yet competence. Here we sit watching the most incompetent, useless, rhetoric obsessed president in our lifetime destroy values, ideas and laws which are uniquely American and the topic of worry should be Sarah Palin?

For the record, OP...I am from Europe, as well...and having had the opportunity to listen to vapid, pompous, back handed "I misspell three words in a single sentence, but I am going to talk to you about what intelligence is" non-sense like yours my whole life, I can tell you one simple thing:

Speaking for myself and for those who have worked hard their whole lives to build something, who have been out in the world, lived life, owned property, owned businesses, kept this country running by paying more in taxes in a single year than typical liberal idiot Democrats do in a life time...we would take a corroded metallic hand puppet in the White House over the jackass sitting there right now.

As for Palin, yeah she's dumb by the traditional liberal idiot definitions, but it is precisely the dichotomous vapidness of those definitions that has landed us in a (at best) 4 year jail sentence period of watching a professional protest organizer and rhetorical whiner waste our money and destroy our value system.

I will take anyone, place or thing over Obama. So until we see an actual Republican candidate for 2012, please cease and desist with your Schopenhauer-esque ad hominem liberal idiot garbage.

Midas, I am not a fan of Barack Obama. I don't think he is tough or strident enough to an effective executive, but I would be hard pressed to prove he is incompetent. I find the charge that BO is incompetent strange, coming from you, a Bush apologist. From reading your posts, I have come to the conclusion that you supported the purest exercise in waste of money and American lives: the Iraq War.

Please, be specific, how is BO incompetent? And what values is he destroying? The president whom you profusely apologize for bailed out banks that should have failed and very little regard for American lives and capital. Were those American values?

I am not cocky, I am confident, and when you tell me I am the best it is a compliment. -Styles P

This is one of the most condescending posts I ever seen, the fact that the poster does not realize it is only further evidence that he is European.

"There is a whole bunch of people in the society who were never taught to really think their own thoughts, to be interested what happends in the world and to differ between wrong and right (at least to understand what is globally accepted as wrong and right)."

So basically anyone who does not agree with you was never taught "to think their own thoughts"...and who dictates what is globally accepted as "right and wrong"...I would think that sending death threats to Dutch journalists for exercising freedom of speech would be a global "wrong", but millions supported their death and protested. Perhaps, it is Europe that is too afraid to think their own thoughts.

Do you even know what the tea party stands for? There are loads of people on Wall Street who explicitly or implicitly support the tea party. It wants the government to leave people alone and get out of the economy. Banks may have some blame for the crisis, but individual citizens and the federal government are the two number one culprits (mandating 50% sub prime mortgages, among many other things).

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

Yes, the most racist continent in the world is so enlightened. I swear there is a new story every week about fans making gorilla noises at some black soccer player, or making hissing noises to simulate the sounds of the gas chamber. Tight ship you guys are running, culturally.

And the financial state of the EU members? OUTSTANDING! They make California look well run. PIIGS is too generous.

I realize that it must be frustrating that ,despite an immense head start, the US crushes you in every field imaginable, save for labor unions (Thank God we're "losing" there).

BTW your English seems pretty good. How's your German? It could be a lot better, I promise.

xoxo, hope that helps.

No. Aside from being heterogenous (as you've implied), America is also highly stratified. The tea-party phenomenon is a bit complicated, but speaking to your other points- when you're born upper-middle class and go to a top college and live in a metropolitian area with a six figure salary then you're just naturally disconnected from the stereotypical "stupid america." We're talking in broad generalizations but I think Ive made myself clear. Now is this ideal for either group- in many ways, No.

^^ She sure did which is, strangely enough, about a year and a half younger than Mr. Obama's mother was when she got pregnant also out of wedlock...

Do I wish some people in my country were smarter? Well, yeah. Am I "embarrassed" that there are some below-average people? Not really, and don't for a minute think that all the stupid people vote Republican either. Even if you want to use education as a proxy, the Democrats traditionally win among people who didn't finish high school.

Why do people rip on her so much? She is far from dumb, this is evident by the fact she stepped down from public office to make huge sums of money from public appearances, books, etc. Also a high level of “academical qualification” isn’t needed for banking, if that were the case Long-Term Capital Management would still be making billions. And I think Europeans just have a problem with their whole continent being an afterthought, reminds me of the South Park episode when Canada goes on strike and no one cares.

i will atagonize if i feel like it... stop being such a pussy.... face reality... you're a moderator on a high school kid web site editing posts at 10 pm on a saturday night

either you're a complete faggot or you're a total homo

Yeah, fuck all of you guys. The tea party is a proponent of stupidity. Why don't you guys realize that the tea party hates wall st as much as the democrats do? Fuck, everyone hates wall st right now. The only real alies left are old school gops, and they don't want to be helpers of us right now.

Again, speaking personally, I am a brown dude. I'm pretty sure every member of the tea party hates me. And I don't give a fuck, because I hate them too.
