Are youtubers overpaid?

Top youtubers are pulling in 7 figure a year and many of them are under 30. For example, PewDiePie pulls in over 5 million a year and he's still I'm his 20s. All he does is scream weird noises while playing videos games. Even if ur not the most popular channel, u can still make a living. I personally know 2 youtubers who have 6 figure subscribrers and pull in high 5 or low 6 figure salaries. Although youtubers seem to be doing non extraordinary things, they make alot of people by retaining an audience. Anyone can make a living off YouTube. People in their young 20s are literally becoming millionaires off of playing games and pulling pranks. Ever kid nowadays aspires to be a YouTube star because it's easy money - no experience needed. Mind as well put out a couple videos and see if u garner any attnention. At this rate, some of u monkeys may start quitting your jobs if u get famous on yotube. I personally think it is ridiculous how much youtubers make

Good for them. How many of them would have made it on TV? They put themselves out there. If people are willing to sit through a commercial to see what ever bullshit they posted then let them collect the cash.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

I get that the free market decides who gets paid but srsly have you seen the videos some of these top youtubers are making? A lot of them literally do stupid shit (albeit sometimes entertaining). Sure originality may be difficult but from day 1 youtubers like pewdiepie make the same types of videos. He's been screaming while playing video games for years now. As long as you master your niche, you can grow an an audience. Youtubers are buying up nice cars and houses w/ all their earnings.

I don't watch him but I'm aware of who he is and I've watched one or two of his videos where he criticizes YT itself so take my opinion with a grain of salt, BUT.

You're doing him a disservice by reducing his content to "screaming at video games". Like the Kardashians, this guy is providing relevant, entertaining content for a very calculated and growing global demographic. He puts in tons of hours keeping up with pop culture in order to keep his stream relevant and interesting for kids, and even more time recording and editing videos. There's a lot we don't see that goes on behind the scenes, and there's a reason he's making what he makes- he's the best at what he does.

Given that the ones who are getting paid a lot of money create some value (albeit it being mostly via product placement and other forms of marketing) for their sponsors, I doubt that they are "overpaid".

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

From the perspective of the companies paying for ads, youtubers are definitely not overpaid. But from the perspective of society, they are definitely overpaid imo. This kid Tanner Fox on youtube got lucky from a shoutout by another youtuber and his channel blew up. Kid makes hundreds of thousands filming anything worth a clickbait. At age 16 he bought a Nissan GTR with youtube $$

. Sure, there are a lot things unfair about society but hey... doesn't hurt to talk smack about other industries/jobs.

can't you make that point about a lot of niches in the entertainment industry?

No. The only industry that I see them impacting would be entertainment. And quite frankly, 'entertainment' is doing a good enough job driving the audience o YouTube.

the notion of someone being overpaid or underpaid is idiotic. if someone is willing to pay them, power to them. it doesn't matter if you disagree with their content, there's a market for it, and that's the beauty of capitalism. this line of thinking won't get you far in the world, unless you want to be a Page for Elizabeth Warren.

because you don't smoke, does that mean the CEO of Altria is overpaid?

because you don't like LULU's designs, does that mean their CEO is overpaid?

because you don't eat junk food, does that mean Indra Nooyi or Muhtar Kent are overpaid?

if advertisers are willing to pay, then these people screaming while playing video games getting paid are worth it, even if you think the content is silly.

worry less about how much others make and focus on building your own war chest

I agree with thebrofessor for the most part..

thefinancekid .. you want to know what you sound like? Read the following in a redneck accent (no offense to rednecks intended)

Top IB analysts are pulling in 6 figures a year and many of them are barely old enough to buy their own beer. All they do is enter made up numbers in excel. Its not even like they are pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. They are literally mindless excel monkeys doing non extraordinary things. Despite their industry being behind major turbulence in the recent years, they still pull in such huge figures. They just benefit from their industry keeping politicians on a "retainer". Anyone can make a living by knowing Excel. People in their young 20s are literally becoming rich off of fake corporate valuations and mega-mergers that push anti-trust concerns to its limits. Every kid nowadays aspires to be a banker because it's easy money - no experience needed. Mind as well, just schmooze with senior bankers and memorize a couple of answers to questions like 'how does depreciation flow through financial statements?' and see if you garner any attention. At this rate, some of you monkeys may start quitting your honest & hard-working blue collar jobs if you even get a wink from any bank. I personally think it is ridiculous how much bankers make

Are Bankers overpaid? Doctors, lawyers, Politicians, Quants? How about really good looking waiters and waitresses?

It doesn't matter, just make your money and keep it stepping.

Absolute truths don't exist... celebrated opinions do.

Well we all can add the OP to the list of people who will be complaining about not getting any interviews for SA positions at tier 3 boutique banks.
