ARMY vs USMC

Hello, i got rejected by med schools recently. i had 37mcat and the rest of my application sucked. i had one interview and flat out rejected. and decided that now the best course of action is to go into the military as an infantry or combat engineer officer. im considering these 2 branches. I would intend to spend 4yrs and then possibly apply to med school again (very unlikely) or to business school(Insead). I have a 3.35 gpa in a typical premed major but would hope that if i got some good lors from my commanding officers and a good gmat, i'd have a shot? I would really like to move to europe eventually...
i would plan not too party too much and to play with my stock portfolio, maybe to read some classic management books by Porter, etc. I wouldnt mind if i got stationed in alaska, though i wouldnt expect to make too many friends there:(
so the question is: should i go with Army or USMC?

Dude, are you retarded?

Your post is barely coherent, you're hoping to be stationed in Alaska while we're at WAR, I have no idea if a 37 is a good mcat score, I could go on, but you get the idea.

Aren't there medical forums you could ask this question on?

No idea on anything you asked about, just because some people chose finance over medicine does not make us experts on any of this.

My advice would be to choose the army as you stand a better chance of getting in to special forces, if not choose the USMC because they have a more badass reputation. Also, be damn sure you're going to make officer, as I doubt med schools would look kindly on you otherwise

From reading your post you seem to have a lot of growing up to do. If you are a college graduate you will most likely become an officer--so realize if you do go that route you will be a leader of other men, possibly in some really messy situations. Don't view the military as your "I am too mediocre for a real career" option. There are enough fuck-ups in the service as is.

As a military officer (in the Air Force) I can tell you that the life is certainly better as an officer, but you would still have opportunities to do outstanding work and have some really amazing life experiences as an enlisted person, though it may be difficult to convey your leadership capabilities to an Ad Com. Only senior enlisted (people with 10-20 years in) really have true leadership experience. Even young officers look to them for guidance.

I would also ask why you are limiting yourself to only those two services? Realize this: if you join the Marines or the Army, you WILL spend at least 50% of those 5 years deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan. I am not trying to sway you away from it if that is what you want--but do it for the right reasons. I joined the Air Force but I am soon leaving to go to Baghdad (that is in Iraq if you didn't know) for a year (its possible from any service). Don't join the grunts in the Army or Marines and hope to be stationed in the US working a desk job. If you are looking for a cushy job with a desk join the Air Force as an officer. There are plenty of AF jobs that are primarily stateside.

Something to consider:

The Marines have guaranteed flight contracts where they promise you flight school to be a pilot before you even go to Basic Training. The Marine Corps is the only branch of the service that GUARANTEES flight contracts in writing. All you have to do is pass the mental and physical requirements (to include a written aviation exam) and you have a guaranteed slot at flight school. Flight experience is not even necessary to secure a flight contract; in fact, roughly 80% of pilots in the Marine Corps had little to no flight experience before entering the Marine Corps.

In short, please don't post any more silly comments like "i would plan not too party too much and to play with my stock portfolio, maybe to read some classic management books by Porter, etc. I wouldnt mind if i got stationed in alaska, though i wouldnt expect to make too many friends there:(" And for God sake work on your grammar.

Comments like that just show how you have pretty much no idea what it is like to be in the military or how you basically let movies and TV guide your understanding of the different services and their mission. If you want to serve and lead, then great--if you just want the feather in your cap and the street cred of being in the grunts, go do something else because you won't make it through.

By the way--the GMAT is really hard, so study up.

Hey GordonGecko, thanks for advice. But wtf is wrong with my grammar? I got 98%ile on med schoo admissions test. I only mentioned it because I still got rejected by med schools, and it is very unlikely that I will pursue a career in medicine in the future. I intend to do my 4yrs as an officer and then either stay in the military or try the grad school options - possibly business school. Not interested in flight contracts because it's an 8yr minimum commitment. It's either infantry or combat engineering for me.

I know that army and marines get to go to iraq. And I don't mind that at all. You work 80hrs/wk there so you get used to it. But then you return back to your base, and I would prefer a nicer location. I would prefer Europe but obviously there is no guarantee that Army would send me to germany or italy.

You can always join the Army and become a male nurse like Gaylord Focker. The Marine Corps doesn't have a medical branch. In all seriousness, all branches of the service are full of fuckups, enlisted and officer. The question I would ask is are you going to be one of them, or one of the few who spend their days herding the sheep and keeping your unit operating effectively. I would avoid the Army at all costs simply because the Marine Corps does all the same things and frankly, we do them better. I have Corporals (E-4) under my charge who have more leadership abilities and responsabilities than some Army Officers. As far as Air Force and Navy, they offer many specialized opportunities. Whatever course you choose, remember that leadership is not derived from rank or position, but from action.

Hey Marine, does this "I have Corporals (E-4) under my charge who have more leadership abilities and responsabilities than some Army Officers." translate into your having a shorter day, more training opportunities(i.e. spend the days doing a lot of shooting and jumping out of helicopters while Army infantry officers do paperwork all day), or what? Frankly, I don't care about such selling lines as "we are the best, we perform better on pft than the army and chair force" or "in the Army you can get promoted to Colonel quicker". I just want to get the most out of my time in the service.

And if Army officers suck so much while you are so perfect, then perhaps you would stand out more as an Army officer and get a better letter of recommendation from your commanding officer if you were to apply for grad schools in the future?

Gecko: This kid is a retard. Serious. You wasted your time. Read his other posts. This thread was his most intelligent on this forum, and he said that he wanted to go Army infantry so that he could read and manage his "portfolio" in fucking Alaska.

How to impress a girl? by b333b (Monkey, 59 Points) on 5/23/08 at 1:38pm i like a girl. never met her but she is hot. there is a personal trainer who created a facebook group to get people to pay to run with him in the park. and this girl joined. and she said she might even come one of these sundays. it doesnt cost that much to attend once a week in hopes of seeing her, though im not one of those dorks who needs to pay for fitness training(im in good shape i swear). and so i logged on here because it sucks so much. i mean there is no guarantee i'll ever see her and thats the only way to hit on her. and i must wait for sunday in hopes of seeing her. and if i do see her, i'll have only 1 chance to impress her. so waiting for some tips for next sunday.

oh and i also wanted to make a rant. i am a student. i am studying for mcat that im taking in 2-3wks. and so im not a lazy bum. but looking through facebook i notice some interesting patterns. like there is a guy who graduated from a ttt and works in something ttt like insurance sales but he describes it like investment banking. and he does have a nice car. so he sometimes gets messages on his walls from models asking him about his car or "how is life? we should catch up" and his reply "oh i see you're back on the market". and he is fat and short. while the only students who get attention from model looking girls are the type who are really really cool(and a bunch of other positive qualities). and i wouldnt be pissed about that "banker" if he had real money. but the truth is he doesnt. and i have nothing

Am I right to go into medicine? by b333b (Monkey, 59 Points) on 8/20/08 at 3:11pm

I am not american. I did my undergrad outside of usa. But I intend to go to med school in usa. I absolutely hate nyc. No friends, no gf. So my reason for going into medicine is so I could one day end up living on the shore of lake tahoe and hopefully having an office within walking distance of my home. Then i could also have a hot wife from russia. And i would be more or less isolated from americans.. But i dont even know if drs really can get good jobs on lake tahoe?? And ive already submitted my med school application. The alternative plan of military->mba seems like too much work. But of course I envy people who can get mba and live in moscow with 6figure incomes. they can go on vacations to finland and to greece. and they can switch 1 hot woman for another. in usa even a millionaire would be happy to have 1 hot woman

PRIVATE PORTFOLIO HELP by b333b (Monkey, 59 Points) on 12/6/08 at 3:36am Hey, so i am in the process of opening one. It takes a few days to verify my bank account using ach. so ive been researching stocks a lot lately. and it seems to me that any high school kid could do as well as the most seasoned investor. i mean you can read the companies' financial statements on finance.yahoo.com, there are even links to quarterly reports. and u can use gurufocus to get graphs of whatever data or ratio you want. and u can even play with different models like motley fool and 'value investment' and 'peter lynch', theyre all available online. but even if they werent, it's not like a high school kid couldnt come up with some "model" on how to pick stocks. i mean most of those ratios are quiete useless(except for picking up some red flags). so other than a lot of reading and compiling all that data, it's not like you need any skills. i have only 2k so im not going to get rich off this investment(and it's not often that you can invest when dow has nowhere to go but up), but i seek your input about this hobby or profession. like why is it so hard to get a job as an investment manager? i mean there are people like warren buffet who have done well for many years, but most investment managers dont have an experience of having started from a 10k portfolio and grown to a million. instead they have worked as someone's bitch at a bank. i bet some 16yo could easily beat them. i mean if they were any good they would quit working after theyve saved $100-200k 2yrs out of college and started investing on their own.

oh and im applying to med schools with little success. have an interview coming up but feel kind of defeated. i wonder whether i get into med school or end up with some blue collar job (military officer), could i work some way to investing professionally? i mean dow hadnt advanced at all from 1961 to 1980. so if you initally have a $2k portfolio and u do twice as well as dow(something most investment managers would be proud of) you're not guaranteed to become rich. but if you are already rich, it is so fucking easy. like right now im passing by stocks that have potential to double or triple when recession is over but i feel that's a terrible return. because if it takes 3yrs to earn $2k, it is really pathetic. so im investing in some of the more riskier stocks.

oh btw i realize it was different back when there was no internet. but now any idiot can go on a site like gurufocus and invest in any large cap stock that warren buffet invested in and lost 50%+. i am not doing that because i feel the return would be too small.

are you obsessed with me you stupid faggot? i do have a portfolio and a 98%ile on mcat and i can do 20pullups and run 18mins 5k. wtf are you? a brown colored immigrant who got an analyst job and watches amerikan football.

Other highlights:

b333b:
hi i'm a senior at a canadian school. my gpa sucks. but more importantly i have absolutely no job experience. and i've never taken any business classes(except for a C+ in accounting in freshman yr). i've been very much a premed. i've done some math(ode, vector calc, prob&statistics, withdrew from analysis) but didnt do too well in it. i think that medicine would be a nice career. but i might also like other careers. i just know i wouldnt make a good lawyer or professor.

... i just want to do m.s. so i could live off a stipend(and not my parents' handouts) and so i could have more time to think whether i really should go into medicine.

... the thing is that i am russian and my dream job would be anything that paid at least 50k/yr in russia. then i could date hot girls and go on vacation to turkey or greece. in usa i could only get that lifestyle as a doctor after completing residency, i would have grey hair by then. but i'm afraid i would fail out of medical school (i hate homework).

... btw, my personality sucks, i'm not outgoing, not much of a salesmen, etc. thanks

b333b:
Also in terms of interviews, what technical skills must you have for consulting(McKinsey) and ibanking? i.e. do u need to have taken(or read) some economics or finance or what?

no, neither MCK nor ibanking have any standards

But the best quotes by far are:

b333b:
i think medicine is definitely more interesting than ibanking. but if i were a business owner, like owner of a chain of gyms in east europe or a chain of strip clubs, it might be even more satisfying.
b333b:
yeah im thinking now owning a real store might be a bit much if you have a full-time job or coursework, unless i have a huge initial capital... havent seen many online stores for sale but i figure it's easier to just hire a programmer to build one for me. but i did see a porno website for sale

This guy is too consistent to be a joke, which is too bad. He will seriously get people killed if he gets in to the army. It is time for b333b to accept there are career options besides medicine, ibd, and porn, and that getting an underage Russian to marry him will not make him happy. Kinda feel sorry for the guy.

....If you're planning on doing the Army, at least take it seriously. I honestly consider the biggest decision of my life to be whether or not I was going to go to West Point or Wharton, and I still feel very conflicted by it. I'm even still thinking about doing OCS after graduation. If you jump into it for the reasons you described, hell, you're just utterly retarded.

"i wonder whether i get into med school or end up with some blue collar job (military officer)."

CLASSIC. Join the Air Force- we have blue collars.

This is a pointless thread.

It sounds like this kid has failed at everything hes done. With his attitude I would love to see him try and go through military training. No one cares if YOU think you are a rock star kid, and the military is no place to go if you can't make friends.

Good luck growing up. Hopefully, theres still a place on your mom's couch and a job waiting for you at the jiffy lube.
