Asia IBD to Asia PE - Good idea or not?
Fellow monkeys,
Just would like to seek a second opinion from some of the more experienced monkeys in the forum given that this is more from an Asia context...
Currently an associate at a BB and recently received an offer to join one of the PE MFs. On a total comp basis, the PE MF pays 50-80% more depending on the variable bonus portion. However, understand that this PE associate program requires you to go to an MBA (and the firm will not fund it) after a 2-3 year stint.
I am extremely comfortable at my BB with a great team culture and decent hours (having said that this could change as people leave all the time in my firm), so having a few second thoughts about this.
I have no desire to get an MBA for a brand upgrade or anything like that - so would realistically look to leave after the PE associate stint and currently thinking about what exit opps are available for me if I do choose the PE route.
I have heard that PE to PE exits in Asia are few and far between (especially for MFs), and that going to MM would almost certainly result in a severe paycut (and likely below BB IBD total comp). However I was also told that I could always go back to IBD if I do regret it...
Am I absolutely insane for wanting to stay in my BB for the pay stability (and perhaps relative job security)?
Asia is a bit too broad. Are you in HK, SG or China? I think location really matters in your case.
Currently based in HK if that helps. Thanks!
