Interesting article that should hit a nerve with the demographics on this site.

the greeks used to think northern europeans (the varvaroi) were naturally stupid because the cold weather shrunk their brains. you idiots should learn some history outside of your IBD interview cramming.

That is a pretty cool tid bit, but what does it have to do with anything. People thing stupid, biased things all the time, just like Asians are inherently smarter haha.

An education is the end all, be all in Asian countries. Kids study year round, all the time. I sure as hell would hope scores would be higher. Kids in the US are on all kids of sports teams, all kinds of feel good bullshit, EC's, etc. We just don't put as much emphasis on it.

That is what endless pressure to learn and be an engineer will do. So lets not sugar coat things when we talk about educational "superiority". The pressure on Indian and Chinese kids to succeed is ridiculous.

Seriously, these nations need to learn that having a heart and taking a break will actually get you further in the long run. What is the point of creating a society that no one would ever want to live in??? Seriously, once your belly is full and you have a place to sleep, it's all a bonus after that and I really don't get it.

Well that is the point and why Asian nations focus on math and engineering. You need to get your belly full first and when a nation is developing there are a need for technical workers. You don't have the depth in the economy to have people studying liberal arts stuff. Practical things first.

This is an issue in India. Their civil engineering sucks. No one wants to build roads or bridges, which is exactly what they need. I think India tends to skew towards computer engineering, hence the strength in their IT area whereas China is more civil/mechanical engineering which makes them better for manufacturing and infrastructure.

our education system used to have all the rigor of the asian systems and all the innovation as well. can you scrape together enough kids in 2012 with enough engineering sense and discipline to send a man to the moon and back using slide rules and log tables?

all this talk about "india and china is beating our ass on test scores, but we are more INNOVATIVE" is a load of bunk. those civilizations were inventing engineering and architectural marvels before the time of christ that the british patent office was only getting aware of in the 19th century. indians and chinese can innovate as well as anyone else. we have beat them over the past 500 years but for the 2000 years before that we were barbarians compared to them.

most of tech innovation is just hard fucking work. most of it is a slog. ask thomas edison. do we have kids willing to put in the time?

most of the engineers in silicon valley are either ethnic indians/chinese or some kind of russian/e. european educated outside of the US system. we can't even grow enough of our native talent.

it's not enough for there to be a few superstars. for every michelangelo or leonardo, there were thousands of hard working artisans bringing their visions into fruitiion. same with science and technology. it's the biggest, most complex team effort you can imagine, and unless everybody is doing their job and UP to their job, it's not going to happen.

india is a basketcase, but they might get their shit together much like china has in the past 30 years when they wised up and dumped communism. these people have already proven that they can lead the world in innovation. they are now getting their ABCs straightened out. given enough time you will see that in the long run, knowlege ALWAYS dominates ignorance.

but you can't write "hamlet" if you don't know the ABCs. this is where our culture is. our kids are some of the laziest, most entitled little bastards ever. you can't even get them interested in science, because it's hard. it's easier to try to be the next BSD CEO and live off the labors of other people than to make something. sorry, kids, someone's got to do the work at the end of the day and we can't have all chiefs and no indians. when i was a TA at a top regional target the calc students didn't even know trig.

Who is debating laziness of Americans? No shit. Unfortunately, parents run the show and kids study what they want. Side effect of Democracy.

And until India fixes their corruption, pollution and generally f'ed up country people will keep coming to the US and working here.

That is why the USA is great. There are no "ethnic Americans". We come from all over and pay taxes. Real simple.

Feb 6, 2012

well then we are fully agreed. i spent a year teaching privileged american college calc students and it was an eye opener. we are in for a rough future.

i do not mean to suggest that only white americans are americans. however, since most of us are white, it bodes badly if white kids don't give a shit about STEM.

If you are technical the future is fairly bright in the US. It will undoubtedly suck if you aren't though.

With the ongoing/upcoming obliteration of finance/medicine/law it appears like a technical undergrad is on of the few professions that optimizes income/debt for someone with a 95th percentile intelligence.
