Ask for plane ticket for wife
If I get staffed on an engagement in Cali for 3 weeks, is it appropriate for me to ask for a plane ticket for my wife to acompany me?

They will not pay for it since it is not a deductible business expense.
That's what I initially thought, but they are buying me 3 round trip tickets to go Monday morning and come back Friday night each week. I figured, I can just stay there all three weeks if they just buy her ticket too, and then it's only 2 round trip tickets. The money they save can go toward my weekend hotel expense.
Somewhat personal question, but how can grad students afford to stay away for 3 full weeks? No classes to teach, papers to grade, discussions to be had with thesis advisors, laboratory experiments to look at, data collection services to be used, etc?
It makes financial sense for them, I'm just wondering if it will look bad for me to ask. I think it should be understandable that I don't want to be away from my wife for 3 weeks...
It would be understandable for those that have good relationships with their wives...many people here would call you crazy for not jumping at the chance for 3 weeks of solitude.
Hall pass!!!
Regards
was just thinking the same thing, either that or 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' - take your pick
Big company, no way. Small company, maybe but unlikely.
My firm allows you to either travel to your city of choice (other than home) for an equal or lower cost or fly someone to the client city for the weekend. You have to pay the tax as if it was earning though. If you don't follow the book exactly, you can get away with ticket price being close enough and can avoid tax if you are flying yourself. Large firm.
While interning for one of the better second tier consultancies I got staffed on project that was outside of London, I had no trouble at all expensing a plane ticket for a friend visiting me during a weekend.
Anyhow, just ASK if you are allowed to expense it. It is not like they are going to get mad at you for asking.
ES aren't you like 22
lol, i'll be 24 in a few months. Got married a few months ago to a girl I've been dating since Highschool.
some companies let you use your roundtrip for your wife - wouldn't hurt to ask i imagine
It's amazing how most larger companies don't really give a shit about savings a few hundos here and there.
.
Having been a consultant for a number of years, I am well aware of the tax laws of such. Even if the client pays for it, it is not a deductible business expense for them either. If you finagle so they are paying for something different than what they think they are paying for, and they deduct as a business expense (which they will), you are putting your client in violation of tax law. If you're OK with that, go ahead.

not appropriate for her to come... I wouldn't think.
.
She's a grad student. She'll do her research in the day when I'm with the client, and then we'll explore in the evenings and weekends.
i know my firm allows it.
at one of the MBB, you can travel to any place cheaper than going home and/or fly someone to where you are if you stay 1 weekend, but you basically need an approval from the partner so up to him/her
Like has been said before many firms have "in lieu of" travel policies. I work at a big firm and we have one.
Our policy is that you can travel anywhere that would be cheaper and you are not taxed. Or you can fly someone else to see you and you will be taxed.
Have co-workers that spent 3 months in Singapore. They basically got to see all of Asia and some of Europe with their "in lieu of travel".
I've never heard it called 'exploring' before.
LOL. SB for you my friend.
hahahaha
