Ask Monty09

I am thinking about hosting a two day bootcamp in Houston that will include the following:

Resume Review
Internship Search Tips
Interviewing Tips
Netwroking session with HR's from leading energy trading firms
Mock Internviews
Various materials on industry

Any interest?

What is the proposed timeline for this workshop?

Haha, sorry.

When this thing gets going on I will be there and speaking on a couple topics at the very least (still undecided as of now). I will be able to bring a couple industry people from my end as well as anyone in my network. I would imagine some 1 on 1 resume review, directed and personalized networking advice, Q&A on anything you guys would want, etc.

Let me phrase it like this. I paid $250 to have my resume redone a couple years ago. Probably the best money spent in a long time. If Monty is targeting the $200-300 range I think this would be an incredible value.

I think what might spice this up a little more is some type of dedicated help for people who come. I would happily sign on to help anyone who goes to this thing long after the event. Basically 2 days of presentations, networking, direct advice and then after it is done with a direct email for continued follow up. Look at it like a spring board for anyone starting out and a continued development as things go on.

i agree on cont help even after event.

chatting with Anthony the other night this idea came up... anyone that knows me well will agree that once i get an idea I am rather obsessed with it. So last 48 hours I have been emailing possible speakers and calling places to hold such event.

get to houston and we will work rest out even if I have to pick you up from airport myself..

Will there be steaks, texas bbq, poker nights, booze, and trips to some of houstons finer adult entertainment areas....

If so I will come...I take it you would be inviting my firm's HR to this shindig? I would be glad to answer any other questions people have about the physical side of things.

anyone that makes it friday night and over 21 can enjoy the hiring practices enron once enjoyed... also the scene of me getting two JP mogran energy guys fired...

i think i may host a small forum with just monty09 stories.. i have some great ones that have thus far cost 4 people their jobs

where enron took their mba;s to close the deal:

Monty & Anthony were both of great help to my internship search this year. Spoke on the phone with Monty and he gave me some great advice which was much appreciated. Anthony also gave me some great guidance during my process so anyone that signs up will not be disappointed.

NYC would be a fantastic location, however I would consider flying out just to be able to attend the seminar.

I'm Canadian but from the value I've gained just from monty's posts this would be a worthwhile opportunity and I'd gladly by down in Houston for this kind of workshop. Interested to hear the details....

I would be interested in this. Monty was gracious enough to speak with me over the phone one day and gave some good advice. I was under the impression that Summer Associate recruiting started in the Fall though. Im looking for internship in Charlotte and Full Time anywhere. Would there be contacts from the Charlotte area?

If we are graduating in June, do you see value in attending as we are all looking for FT rite now as some of us were not SA's. Im interested so send me a pm, although im just not seeing if this is a good idea if im graduating in June 2011 rather then in 2012. Looks like im a year late to the party

your call. Vaule is in what you put into it not timing. I did not get an energy job until almost two years after UG. End of the day you may not end up in your dream job come June 2011 but that should not mean you stop dreaming.

monty, i'll be attending the energy rodeo but have a quick q first. what are the areas in energy trading that you'd guess will be hottest and best to start a career in out of oil, coal, ng, power, emissions, renewables, petrochem, and anything else i left out? so that if you were 3 years away from graduating, lived in the Houston area, and hoped to get 1-2 energy trading internships before then, what areas of energy would you be most be targeting and what companies would you most be looking at to intern/work for afterwards?

Looking at the recent developments in the field from an outsider perspective, it looks like ng or lng is where most of the new action is. Energy companies are betting big $$ on unconventional ng. The world ng market is still fractured into the Hub based US market, shizo euro market (a battlefield for pricing) and the crude oil indexed asian markets and the old structures are getting shaken up it seems. But again, that's an outsider perspetive.

been thinking about this and really cant say.. when I started in 06 i was given teh choice of power or carbon.. everyone told me to take the carbon job.. TONS of growth... well I ended up taking the power job after meeting the manager... turns out that carbon market is still in "growth" stage... so I am the last person to tell you what will be the new new thing as michael lewis likes to say

To refer to liar's poker: As long as you don't end with equities in Dallas, you are fine. Carbon is not really a product either, it's legislation that makes it something to be traded and thus is very dependent on random political decisions. In Europe the market has produced tons of fraud scandals and often the market has been bipassed by just giving so many free emission tickets to companies they don't need to buy any extra anytime soon.
