Asking for Referrals during a networking call. Yes or No?

EDIT: By referrals I meant you ask something like "Would you recommend me to speak with anyone else?"

Hi everyone,

I've been reading on many advices on this forum and over the internet about referrals in a networking call. Some people say it's a MUST DO in EVERY networking call to expand our contacts. Another group gives some discretion, meaning they only ask for referrals if the call is going well, or until the call becomes more "personal." Others even avoid asking for referrals to analysts/associates because you run the risk of them thinking you are ungrateful and that their advice is unhelpful and unappreciated.

Personally I've asked for referrals for every phone call but two, since it wasn't easy clicking with them. What are your thoughts?

Yeah, that’s what I thought this post was going to be about. It’d be weird if someone asked me for that type of referral, because I really only give those to friends I personally know, or friends/siblings of friends.

As for this type of referral, I always just asked in my follow up email rather the call, but I guess either works

I always end a networking call with "I'll follow up with you soon, but if there's anyone else you feel I may benefit from speaking with, please let me know!" They typically respond with either "I actually do have someone in mind" or "I'll think about it just follow up with me" and every single time, they've introduced me to someone else. It works, and it's how I got my current job.

As someone who gets these calls all the time, I will happily give you the emails of a few of my buddies. Recruiting is hard, everyone on the other side gets it. Just ask "is there anyone else in the group you think I should talk to?".

If I thought you were awesome, I'll even tell the referral to look out for your email. I only get annoyed when people ask for an MD's email when I give them an analyst/associate, or email the MD saying I referred them when I didn't.
