This is about to get really interesting.

For those of you who don't know, he's released really nuclear shit in encrypted files for the past couple years. Now hundreds of sites have this stuff, and not even the NSA can decrypt the files. Assange has said that if he's prosecuted or Wikileaks is shut down, he's going to release the password and then it's game on.

Evidently it's stuff that will make his last release seem like a Disney movie. Guantanamo torture vids, Afghan civilians being slaughtered, etc...

What are everyone's thoughts on this. From my perspective, it seems like a bad bluff. Here's why...

  1. This dbag doesn't seem like the type that would hold onto his most revealing cards for a rainy day. Say what you want about him, I believe he is actually devoted to his cause, however misguided his cause is. So, he cares about publishing the secret "truths" of government that everyone knows about but no one has actual proof of. If he was actually sitting on videos of torture I say they would have been released a long time ago.

  2. If the file is, in fact, real, then the countless people that are after him must know that at some point, whether now, a year from now, or after his death, Assange will release the password to the file for the world to see. The file is already on thousands of computers so it would take merely a press statement for the documents to get out. In other words, its an empty bluff and a poor source of leverage because it isn't believable that Assange will take the password to the grave with him.

  3. He's been arrested, Assange hasn't released the password, and WikiLeaks has issued a statement saying they have no plans to in the immediate future.

Yes, I understand that if he releases the password it would essentially be suicide, he'd be giving up his only leverage. But obviously given the arrest and the mass attacks on everything WikiLeaks, no politician or policing body is yielding to his threats. So, what is he waiting for?

http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/301088[/quote] I think the NSA can actually see the files it apparently has a backdoor in the encryption key used and he apparenty did it to show that the files do infact exist and its not just a bluff. Also its not just him that has the password other Wikileaks people have it too

I think everything should be made public.

Why shouldn't you know what your government is up to? Up to you to decide if you agree with it or not.

And up to the governments to raise their game if they want to keep it secret.

+1. If people don't want their secrets released, maybe they shouldn't keep secrets and then demand that people be seen naked before they get on a plane.

Don't agree with what Assange is doing, but he absolutely has the right to do it. Somebody needs to step up to bat for this guy and set up a way for folks to support his legal defense (without supporting the leaks).

It's a crazy situation. Supposedly the crime he committed in Sweden is having sex without a condom, which obviously isnt a crime in other countries. The punishment is also only about the equivalent of $1000 US equivalent and no jail time. He just doesnt want to go to Sweden because they will extradite him to the US and they will hold him for years without charges while waterboarding him

Having sex without a condom, when you are explicitly told a condom is a prerequisite, is a crime in nearly every country.

Or is the crime that the girl is stupid enough to not tell if he has a condom on or not?

All this "set the people free" shit is a fucking joke. Anybody who needs a video to show them that governments cut the heads of babies for profit, wage wars for spite and do the generally petty shit that defines the vast majority of human beings at one point and time in their lives, is off their rocker. In a day and time when you can photochop Obama's head on Godzilla's body and make him square dance, what actual credibility does any video have?

This whole fiasco comes conveniently on the heels of an election which changed absolute fuckin dick. Shockingly convenient timing...as always. Just more smoke and mirrors for the masses. Stay in your homes citizens!!!

He’s got a creepy vibe. He could actually win a “Most Likely to become registered sex offender” contest based solely on looks and mannerisms.

Otherwise, I would be 90% certain this whole scandal is phoney. Now, I’m about 50/50.

I usually agree with you, but I would have to say that Assange released the personal communications between one individual and another. These weren't secret files, just memos. America will have trouble keeping secrets or convincing "allies" to tell us anything if the files can be leaked willy nilly by some love level government employee.

I can't talk about his "right" since he is not an American and he is not releasing anything in a discrete place. Its all in cyber place.

I really find it funny how Sweden, the den of Socialism, is the one nailing this dude.

Julian has nothing on the USA. His comments really expose his true nature. If he gave a shit about free information he would release all that he had and not held it back. He cares about hurting American interests and making himself look like some kind of a hero. In reality he pedals stolen goods and gleefully messes with peoples lives.

Nothing he has released has shown the USA to be doing anything other than dealing with an incredibly petty and complicated world. China attacks Google because of a nasty search result. Iran is dangerous, Putin has basically made himself an almost permanent president and Yemen is helping us attack people who want to harm us. Wow, evil USA.

Julian pissed off the free world and no one wants to help him. When the Swedes are arresting your ass and most likely turning you over to the USA you know you went to far.

This idiots supporters apparently hacked into the mastercard website and caused some serious issues.

How safe do you feel now that all of the information about your livelihood could be easily hacked and manipulated all in the name of some nut job's opinion of "information access to all"

Some things are meant to be secrets, thats why they exist.

Now tell me, if you had a million dollar idea would you tell the whole world?

No you wouldn't, and the same goes for any governments strategic planning or any companies financial conditions that could shuttle the financial world and economy into more trouble that its already in

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis - when I was dead broke man I couldn't picture this

Whether the hack is putting information in jeopardy or not is not the issue. It is the concept that government or corporations have no right to privacy. I didn't realize that private conversations between diplomats was public info.

Julian basically facilitates the distribution of hacked information. Info he knows is illegally obtained. He doesn't care what the effects of his releases are. He is a whore looking for attention.

1.) Governments and Corporations do have a right to privacy the same way individuals do. 2.) Governments, corporations, and individuals lose that right to privacy when someone obtains their private data without using illegal means to do so.

It's really that simple. If the Coca Cola formula sneaks out and someone obtains it legally and decides to publish it, that is their first-amendment right.

Whoa

1) Of course Berkeley would honor a traitor like that POS.

An Army Private, someone whose only function is to obey commands. Why just obey? Because at that level you don't know anything about the overall theme of things. His only job is do do what he is told and defend the USA. He disagrees with the war ( no shit, well don't VOLUNTEER then ) so he takes confidential information ILLEGALLY and sends it to Julian who uses it to smear this country .

Now he is to be recognized as a hero? Wow, fuck them.

2) Government and companies have every damn right to privacy that we do. As long as neither is breaking the law they have the right and expectation of secrecy.

Coca Cola formula "sneaking" out. Get real. That Army Private ( and maybe someone else ) downloaded and stole information that was not meant to be seen. They sent that illegal information to Julian who knew these documents did not come lawfully. He then distributes them and uses them as a weapon against USA and our interests and allies.

Let's see what was released. Nothing that shows the USA acting like some demonic, evil creature. Instead it shows the USA dealing with petty and ridiculous bullshit around the world. It shows diplomats making frank assessments of individuals who are in positions of power around the world.

I suppose it would be wonderful if I hacked into the Air Force and "accidentally" acquired detailed schematics for our nuclear missiles and "leaked" them to China and the Middle East. Wow, government should be transparent and I, as an American, demand to know everything about everything.

The government needs a level of secrecy. This does not mean breaking the law, but it does mean that not everything that goes on needs to be revealed to everyone else. We have enemies and allies and sometimes you need to not show your hand. Julian doesn't care about anyone but himself, plain and simple.

I want the government to be transparent, I want there to be investigative reporting, but what he is doing is crossing the line.

In summary, Fuck Julian!

IlliniProgrammer:
Assange is a former hacker- he's not that foolish. Today's public key encryption isn't that complicated and he can encrypt it without giving the NSA a backdoor. He just has to cross his fingers that the NSA hasn't secretly figured out a way to solve NP-complete problems in polynomial time...

I think the odds of that are very slim lol.
