At the risk of sounding like a girl...

Would you guys recommend any type of anti-aging facial cream? In fact, a whole routine/regimen (wash, some type of exfoliant, when to use them, etc.) would be even better. Kinda wanna nip the bags under the eyes thing in the bud, tighten skin/pores, prevent wrinkles, etc. I also have very oily skin so I'd like to avoid anything that adds to that and balances it out. I'm using the oil cleansing method and seeing some results but wanting some anti aging along with the anti breakout shit.

And let's try to get through this without someone posting the opening monologue of American Psycho please..

Out of curiosity, why do you want to look younger? The appeal is obvious for women because they age like milk. But men age like wine. Why not embrace it?

Well I'm told often that I look anywhere between 20 and 30 and I'm barely 22, so I'd just like to eliminate some puffiness, tighten a little, etc. Nothing crazy, just looking for a skin care routine that won't contribute to my oil skin and breakouts while still moisturizing.

What's wrong with sounding like a girl?

Anyway. La Mer eye concentrate is amazing for your eyes but other La Mer products are overrated in my opinion unless you're over 50 years old or have severely dry skin. A much cheaper alternative would be just dabbing a tiny bit of Vitamin E oil around your eyes and on wrinkle problem areas a few times a weak. Also, if you can get a prescription for tretinoin from your dermatologist do it. It's amazing. It's really for "acne", but it's also a miracle cream for smooth, wrinkle free skin. To get rid of puffiness try putting tea bags on your eyes (wet ones obvs, and no I'm not joking).

If you have oily skin I say cleansing with oil is a really good idea. Not to push you towards a super "girly" product... (I mean, the packaging has geishas on it but maybe you could hide that?) Tatcha has an amazing skin care line with oil cleansers, rice enzyme cleansing powder, and an excellent anti-aging moisturiser. Also they have these blotting papers that are brilliant for shiny skin. Another product line that's a little less feminine and much less expensive would be Dr. Hauschka, and they have this whole cleansing/moisturising ritual that I found pretty good but not sure how effective it is with oily skin.

The main thing for skin care is finding a proper routine. Some people moisturise day and night, other's just in the morning to let their skin breathe. Some people only rinse with water in the morning and then deep cleanse at night. Some people find exfoliating too harsh while others do it every other day. It really depends on your skin type, age, lifestyle, and budget. Feel free to PM if you want particular advice on a certain product/issue

P.S. on a really depressing note, you can't reeeeally minimise pores. Unless you use a laser. But that's a little extreme. Try splashing your face with ice cold water after cleansing and before moisturising though because it helps tighten them a little.

May have to buy credits to award you a SB.

I'm roughly midway between the age of most of you on this forum and Uncle Eddie. I would have found this "girly" ten years ago but now I'm saying f*ck no, I'm not ready to age that much yet. I've personally started using moisturiser, just stole my wife's until she bought some for me.

Also, I think the Sephora pickup strat is a good idea for you single guys.

Thank you for the very thorough response. The La Mer is a bit out of my price range, so I think I may just try regular old Vitamin E oil for the eyes. I do have puffiness on the upper cheek/lower eye area so maybe I'll try the teabag thing, I've heard that before.

Do you recommend sticking with the oil cleansing routine? My current routine is organic, raw honey (yes, honey) in the morning and jojoba oil cleansing method at night. The research I've done on both make them seem great for oily skin/acne/general skin health, but I was just wanting to implement some sort of anti aging part as well, to tighten my skin and moisturize without adding oilness.

Unfortunately the Tatcha is a little out of range as well. I may PM you for further advice after I research a bit more.

I'm getting older, so I understand the sentiment of trying to keep everything in order. As nomadic_nomad has noted (among other interesting ideas I may have to look into), routine is key. I'd go get yourself a Clarisonic and a big bottle of Cetaphil (the gentle version) and use them every morning. Always shave with a sharp razor (there was a whole post on shaving, I don't have any strong opinions on the razor, just that it's sharp), use a good aftershave balm (I like Nivea's aftershave balm), then before you leave for work, use a facial moisturizer with some SPF in it (Nivea has a good one of these, too). Then, continue to do that until you die or stop caring, whichever comes first.

"My caddie's chauffeur informs me that a bank is a place where people put money that isn't properly invested."

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess just the basic Clarisonic is fine? I'll look into those. My shave routine is pretty good. I use a double edge safety razor that I replace the blades on regularly, always shave after a warm shower, and use the same Nivea post-shave stuff, the alcohol free one. I'd love to start implementing a moisturizer but worried about it causing more breakouts.

The basic clarisonic works very well, go ahead and run with it! If you're concerned about breakouts, just make sure whatever moisturizer you buy is water based. That should do the trick.

Go to Sephora. Ask one of the sales girls for help with face cream. They can even give you free samples to try. Or, go to a dermatologist and ask him.

Straight guys would go to a Sephora to pick up chicks. Straight chicks would go to, say, Dick's Sporting goods to pick up guys. You finding gay guys in Sephora is as predictable as me talking to lesbians at a hockey game. Hope this helps?

Retin-a is good for night... increases cell turnover etc. You can read about it/check out results online. Doc can prescribe it too. Definitely tightens skin and doesn't cause oil.

I'm 21 and people think I'm 30. Never bothered me and I've found it beneficial usually.

  1. Your sexual market value doesn't decrease with age if you do it right (Give up on life and become a fat, old, polyester-wearing man).
  2. You look more responsible and experienced and shit for work stuff. big bidness

Don't see the downside. And by the time I'm like 70 and my age starts to become a detriment to my ability to bag slams, we'll probably have the tech to overcome that somehow.

Now if you have puffiness or acne or whatever, then yeah, for sure that makes sense. I had acne as a teen and finally took Accutane (isotretinoin) after using topicals for years. Made my skin look better than ever after 4 months. Shit's magic.

I use St. Ives face scrub and a bit of face lotion in the morning, that's it. I had terrible acne growing up and probably don't need to do this anymore, but I guess getting carded a decade after the fact isn't all bad. Drink lots of water: I park a gallon under my desk and chug about one a day.

Did you do anything for your acne or did it go away with age? If so, at what age? I kept thinking mine would go away, took Accutane at 19, and my kin's looked great ever since. But I hear that it comes back sometimes. Which I really, really don't want to happen.

Also, won't face scrubs accelerate aging in the long run? Your skin, like any organ, only has so many regeneration cycles in it in a lifetime. Scrubbing a layer off each morning means you burn through them quicker. But you look good doing it. I have no idea what I'm talking about, but it makes sense to me.

I dunno, I don't on the weekends and there are periods of time where I disappear into the woods or some random beach to surf for a while. So, I'm thinking my body recharges then. LOL I'm not sandblasting, just a very light scrub, but next time I'm at a doctor's I'll talk to them and maybe I should cut down to once a week or something.

Honestly, I try to keep things as basic as possible in general. A bit of maintainance may be annoying/girly/IDGAF but is worth it in the long run. Health is a tough thing to fix, and I'd prefer just to stay on top of everything as much as possible.

A few more thoughts:

-I personally use a Clarisonic but I'm not sure if that's the best option for you. I would try other methods first and use that as a last resort as they're a bit pricey (but a good investment). Also, don't trust the products included with them as I've found them to be very drying/harsh on the skin.

-Like other commenters here mentioned, definitely use SPF every single day on any inch of skin that might see the sun for even two seconds. Think hands, neck, and face. People always forget about their hands until it's too late and they're covered in liver spots and leathery skin.

-Because you have oily skin I would only moisturise in the morning, especially because you're cleansing with oil at night. Dr. Hauschka's normalising "day oil" might work, I think they sell it at Whole Foods. I think someone else mentioned Cetaphil... I've never been a fan but my dermatologist recommends it.

-On exfoliating... I personally think it is good for your skin but going overboard on a more than weekly basis will irritate your skin. Skin is gentle so be gentle with your products. If you're already cleansing with honey (awesome btw, honey is a miracle product and can be used basically anywhere... try it for scalp treatments too), add fine rolled oats or rice powder to it once or twice a week. It's messy but it helps exfoliate. The clarisonic is good for exfoliating as well.

-For the wrinkles... Moisture is key, but I think for now you'd be fine with just vitamin e around the eyes. Make sure you dab gently around the eye area with your ring finger, never rub the skin around your eyes because it's delicate. Get a script for Retin-A or generic tretinoin cream. Use them at night. They help collagen and elastin production as well as fight acne so they're pretty awesome. And if you have good insurance they end up costing like $5.

Okay-- done preaching. Not embarrassed to say that skincare is a passion of mine.

And let's try to get through this without someone posting the opening monologue of American Psycho please..

For your oiliness - Avoid alcohol-based cleanser and toner. It makes your skin overcompensate with more oil. I wash my face in the evening with Estee Lauder Splash-Away for strong cleansing. In the evening sth naturally-based like Lush's Ocean salt would be fine - Use mattifying moisturizer (i.e. Murad Mattifier - $37) - Use toner. It allows products to absorb better. - Anti-aging: Philosophy's Miracle ($55). Comes with retinol. - Try fix discoloration too. Even skin tone looks great all the time no matter what color you are. Use Dr. Brandt's Retinol Day cream along with your own sunscreen - Twice a week, have a facial mask. Coal mask is said to be good with clarifying and anti-aging. Look for stuff that anti-oxidizes - Wear sunscreen all the time. Period. - Wear something for your neck too.

TL;DR: for anti-aging - Philosophy serum, sunscreen, facial mask. For oiliness - no alcohol ingredient, mattifier, let skin breathe once in a while

Brah, I don't think anti-aging creams are generally kosher.

...

By that, I mean a lot use cells from babies' foreskin as one of the active ingredients. So have fun shmearing foreskin on your face. No really. But this is something you should ask on a forum targeted to superficial women. Skin is skin, it just so happens that 90%(?) of people who are so concerned with anti-aging creams, makeup, mascara, and so on are women... and most people here aren't.

I did it on a forum targeted to superficial men instead, because I wanted opinions on Men's skin care/anti-aging. I'm not looking to use makeup and shit, just a simple but thorough anit-aging routine.
