At what GPA threshold should you not include your GPA on resume for IB Summer Internships?
3.5? 3.0? At what point does it begin to hurt you?
Is it better, if you have a low GPA, to include your concentration GPA as a buffer? What if your concentration is the problem, like a hard math/science major?
Anything under a 3.5 probably starts to hurt you. Many banks seem to have an unofficial cutoff at 3.7 as well.
If your concentration grade is much higher than cumulative, you can just use that, but it will be suspicious. If your concentration grade is the problem, than use your cumulative.
I'd second what the above poster said. Also, if you don't include your GPA, they will automatically assume its
if you have a 3.4 and have a good case such as athletics, working to pay for school, any special circumstance. throw it on there and have your resume reflect that. other than that banks will really make a cut at 3.5 and even higher
I had a 3.4 from a non-target while recruiting, and multiple analysts asked me why my GPA was so low. I made sure to add other info (e.g., SAT score, relevant minor GPA) to cushion.
Side tip: some people I know put their “pro forma” GPA, assuming they got straight A’s for the semester/quarter.
If GPA is an issue, networking is your best bet to get a second look. Then nail it in your interview! Good luck!
what is pro forma gpa?
Let's say Person A currently has a 3.3 GPA. Assuming they get straight A's this semester, their GPA would be boosted to 3.5. On their resume, they would put "GPA: 3.5" instead, because by the time the firm runs a check of academic history, it would check out. That being said, you gotta be sure you get straight A's, because otherwise you would be lying to your future employer.
I'm also writing this as theATL responds to my comment. I'm not saying it's ethical, but I know people who've done it in order to get a second look at their resume.
Your side tip is a joke right?
There is no “pro forma GPA”, what your friend is doing is lying. I would not recommend doing this, I understand that it gives you hope you get the job, etc. but you will get fired or lose an offer over this, and it shows a very clear lack of integrity.
