Average time spent on transports like tube/metro
As the title says,
Your average daily time spent on public transports such as tube, metro?
Wanna change zone and given it'll take around 20 min more (tot. 45) wondering how this could affect my habits or time management
Pros:
+ nicer house
+ less per week cost
+ nicer borough
Cons:
- less time spent on the tube
Cheers
25 mins away from my job. I don't mind the time spend on the tube, however I hate changes. I either read the FT/a book, so I do not feel like wasting my time. Could be further away, my current borough is nice and not too expensive (could of course find somewhere cheaper further buy I do not need to save more).
Interesting stuff. Where are you based in?
Job Square mile, living in Brixton. I was surprised by the number of bankers buying/renting there. Would recommend Shoreditch/the Wool house if you can afford it. What about you?
Where do you work/study? Shoreditch is very dynamic, I get that some people don't really like it but at the same time you always have friends in the area. Fulham is nice but residential. You could check Clapham is active as well. Depends what you are looking for. Primrose Hill is kinda boring for me. If you like Bayswater why not Notting hill?
Heard flats in Canada Water are nice as well, close to Canary Warf and often have a gym included.
I'll be studying at Cass, so Barbican/Moorgate
I do like residential places as well Baysw/NottHill are fine, also looking at these
Heard the same about Canada Water, but atm is quite empty (no decent properties on the market)
I would like to spend less than £300/pw if possible
Canada Water isn't bad, quite modern and there's one place that has a load of makeshift bars / "restaurants" inside, not my cup of tea but not terrible. And the location is pretty good, especially if you were to work in Canary Wharf.
Currently living in London Bridge / Tower Bridge so I just walk to my office near St Pauls. Used to live in Stockwell and that involved a 30min commute (~20min tube), wasn't terrible but I do prefer being able to walk, especially with the weather we've had this year!
And to echo what Pan European Monkey said, if I do move further out, I'll definitely try to avoid having to change lines, really adds on time and effort to the commute.
Thanks mate. I definitely need to check what the south offers. Yet, i'm looking for something close to west.. I loved to live there!
Clapham is a good option then, I have a mate living there now and he loves it. Nice flats / houses, decent community, bars and all, and not overly expensive. It seems very much the place to be for young professionals based on what I've heard / seen.
I haven't seen much of Hammersmith but what I did see (around the tube station) it wasn't very pleasant, but it might well be 100m further.
I'd say just go to some viewings in each of the areas, and maybe spend some time during the day and evening in those areas just to see what the vibe is like.
1h mate, it's been awful, i have to take two buses. still, want to save some money and not rent near the place. think it will pay off someday. but it's killing me. job is interesting af tho, so it pays off in that way
Sounds brutal.
My daily commute is roughly 2.5 hours. Why do I feel the need to mention this? So that anyone who is working in banking/ any other 12-20 hour a day job can heed my warning; do not do this under any circumstance. Obviously, people accept a longer commute to save $. If you can afford it, live as close to the office as possible.
For me its 8-10 minutes walking, the time I can save is much better invested in studying or just have some time for the gym. Additionally, the tradeoff between buying a ticket and pay some more for the small flat I have was still acceptable
Reverse commuting from NYC to Greenwich atm so it's ~1.5 hours..temporarily living at home but hopefully with my own place it'll get cut down to ~1 hour
25 minutes for 2,5km of travel. I live in Munich which has a great public infrastructure if you don't have to transfer trains. Flipside is I could ride to work on a bike and be there in 12 minutes, except I've left my bike at the office too many times after a long day to justify not having a monthly ticket.
Jealous. Love Munich but not fluent in German. What are the requirements like for the city in terms of skills/jobs available? Currently in public markets.
Also... Get a second bike?
Then he would have 2 bikes left at the office
Must agree with Munich though, been once and loved it (it was during the 2014 World Cup so that helps), not sure how good it is for finance though? Must be a fair few jobs obviously being a major city, but it's not exactly renown for it's finance sector.
Don't know about you but I have traveling. Would talk with family and see their thoughts. Definitely expand the pros/cons list and see what else you can come up with. Very important decision as it seems it'll be the difference of about an hours worth of time each day.
Interning in Frankfurt for the summer and I only spend a 10 mins commuting. The best part about the city's size and infrastructure is you can be anywhere in less than 20 minutes on public transport. This really makes choosing your living arrangements flexible to your preferences.
