Avian Flu/Egg shortage & how to get better at predicting these types of events
Cal-Maine (NASDAQ: CALM) - the largest egg producer in the U.S. is up 40+ percent YTD.
This has been mainly driven by the Avian Flu scare which has caused egg shortages in parts of the country alongside increased egg prices.
I read my first article about the shortage today as I had not been following the flu scare very closely. After I read the article I immediately Googled public US egg distribution companies, discovered Cal-Maine, and was upset that the stock price had already appreciated so greatly.
I was wondering if any older people could provide advice on realizing more quickly how abnormal events, like the avian flu outbreak, affect markets. Are there books on this matter? How do you develop a mindset that allows you to analyze any news bit, and think about how it might affect markets (especially equities)? Practice?
