How to: transition BO internship into FO FT offer
Hey guys,
I'm in an undesirable spot and I am seeking advice. So here is a quick background: I just finished my junior year at a non-target, double major math/finance , 3.8 cumulative, and have an operations internship for this summer at a mid-sized bank in NYC.
My goal is to land a full-time offer for any front office position (I was originally leaning towards research and ib, but also interested in s&t after my role in operations).
So my question is, what exactly can I be doing from now until FT recruiting (I believe starting end of summer) to both get FO interviews and to land an offer. Also will banks even be hiring FT FO analysts outside of their internship class (fresh FT hires)? Am I even looking at the correct things? I know I will get stuck if I continue my role in operations. Any advice please.
Thanks.
Network with FO people during your BO internship. Lunch and coffees are always great!
BO Trading SA to FO Full-Time (Originally Posted: 01/28/2009)
It seems like most internships in trading are BO. How does one ensure their FT role will be front office? Also if I had a BO internship would it be reasonable to get a FO Full-Time offer within the same firm or with another?
Thats a difficult move your probably going to stay in BO and have to work up to trade assistant then eventual trader.
About how long would that take?
try to meet as many people as you can during your internship, at least in my experience, fo people assume you are capable if you are able to get in the firm in the first place, so when you meet with them its a much easier conversation/interview.
Back-Office SA to Front-Office FT (Originally Posted: 02/25/2009)
I have a back-office SA internship with an energy trading group. It is a rotational internship so I will see trading, structuring, sales, risk, etc. I want to land a FT front-office role with either this firm or another next year. Any tips on how to get there? Also, would any of the previously mentioned groups look better than others during FT recruiting? If I am unable to move to a front-office position, which groups would give me the best opportunity to transfer to front-office later in my career?
since when was sales/trading back office?
the obvious answer would be to network, network, network with your firm's decision makers. Set up quick meetings with a higher-up in the FO role you want to be in. Also, work hard.
noob.. when he says rotational internship, it means he gets to experience diff aspects of the business which entails, back, middle, front office.
aggiebanker, i would say networking is the most important factor to potentially move to where you want to be within the company. also, be sure to put your best foot forward, when the situation presents itself. another important factor is to let your intentions be known to those that make the decisions so that if something opens up, you're ready, willing, able to step in.
