Background Check - job title discrepancy
Hi guys,
I accepted an offer from a f500 banking company and now my background check is processing.
The company requires me list all employments and projects experience in 7 years.
My problem is:
During employment verification, a discrepancy raised on one of my unpaid project experience. When pursing my master degree, I worked on some research projects related with big data and informatics in a professor's research group. Generally it was a research assistant but I listed it as data analyst in resume because it's the best description of what I did. But from my advisor, he verified this experience as a graduate student.
Will this lead to my offer being rescinded?
Thanks so much!!!
No, that's retarded
Background Check - Inconsistent Title (Originally Posted: 08/24/2015)
Hi all, I recently accepted an offer from a MM firm and am going through the background check. During the past winter, I worked on the co-op program at an Asset Management firm. It's on-site and full-time, and I did the work same as an analyst. On my resume, I listed my title as analyst intern for that experience. However, when I filled in the background check form, I noticed that the official title for that position is student worker.
Given that there might be a discrepancy in the job title, should I be worried about the background check? Or should I reach out to HR before the background check result comes out?
Thanks so much!!!
Do nothing. If they have any problems, they'll contact you and you can clarify. It's a minor point.
I think it's minor, interns are generally students so I wouldn't worry so much
Ohhh someones about to lose his job

I have an SA offer and am now going through background check. I did a self background check on myself using choicepoint and realize the titles are different from what I have on my resume.
I was a BB technology summer analyst last summer. I was also a "operations consultant I" at my university during my freshman year.
However, my background check yielded the following result.
BB Name Date [Accurate] Reported Position: Summer Analyst ---- Actual Position: Specialist
University of Blah Date [Accurate] Reported Position: Operations Consultant I ----- Actual Position: Temporary Employee
I understand why my BB reported me as a specialist because that's how the hierarchy goes if you start full time in technology at that regional office (houston). you go from Specialist->Senior Specialist->AVP->VP->SVP->Director->MD. So they put me into the HR system as specialist instead of summer analyst. However, summer analyst is the title on my contract.
I called up my school and asked why they reported me as temporary employee. They said "operations consultant I" is only an internal title. For all external purposes, the school treat all student employees as temporary employee.
Are these discrepancies enough to raise red flags and have HR question me or do they get this often so it's no big deal? I swear I was completely honest and I reported my positions on resume as they were written on my contracts.
It is a school job and a normal sounding position. You run into trouble when you over inflate relevant positions. If you said you were #1 summer analyst at Goldman and you worked on 3 live deals and it turns out your were a mail boy you will be in trouble. You stated that you worked for the school, it was a summer job and you were an XYZ. The school just called you a temp which in fact you were because all summer jobs are "temp".
Relax.
I think I wasn't clear in my original post (which I edited)
Basically, my title was summer analyst at my BB technology internship last summer according to my contract. That's what I wrote on my resume. My BB decided to report my title as "Specialist"
and
my internal title for my school's workstudy job was "Operations Consultant I", which is what I wrote on my resume. My school reported me as a "Temporary Employee".
Sorry for the confusion.
How does this work with all the unpaid internships people have? If they never reported you to any agency and you are not in the system do they just call them up?
you should be ok. Just my guess. But obviously with HR you could get every right and still get screwed.
I'm pretty sure this kind of thing happens alot.
Basically it will only screw you over if it is obvious that you lied on purpose. And that obviously isn't the case (anyone can see that). You will be fine! I 100% guarantee it! relax. Remember this is an HR department- they've done this before and know all the tricks. They can easily tell the cheaters from the ppl who are trying to be honest.
p.s.- I did the same thing with a university job. it has an internal title which I listed when in fact the real title was something more general like "student associate" ..happens all the time. no biggie. And they can confirm the internal title if they desire.
No one cars you're fine
