Standard checks are typically DBS, counter-terrorism, Scotland Disclosure, adverse media/SNS, credit check, degree verification, job history + references, ROW, address verification and any other public safety checks.

Barclays did this for me for 10 years, across all countries I have lived in. Took 2 months.

Why would anyone from India call your references? Are you based in India? Have you worked in India before? All 3rd parties contracted were 100% British and called from within London even.

bit niche but do they check about society roles? like being treasurer at a society or something?

 

I have never heard or seen that, unless you disclose that role on your CV, tell them about it specifically (ie as an achievement or extra curricular) or unless there are new forms where roles are requested to explore traits regarding character & fitness, trust.
