Backoffice to Front Office help
Hi guys,
I am about to touch 3 years in a backend IB role for a BB. In 2019, the senior management was quite impressed with my performance and I was informed that I'd be offered a FO internship role whenever an opportunity arises.
Unfortunately the BB isn't actively recruiting from their back end teams due to tougher immigration laws in the US and there's been just a couple of people who managed to go the US.
I lost patience and then cold emailed one of the EDs of the FO team and although he replied after a few weeks, he says he is happy to recommend my name internally.
Unfortunately, things haven't progressed so far and I need your advise to help me navigate this situation.
I am about to turn 23 and will be touching the 3 year experience mark in just a month or so and really need to look forward to a more dynamic and challenging role.
I've tried looking out for domestic IB firms as well but Indian IB recruiters are very narrow minded and only look for MBA from top 3 colleges in India or CA rank (CPA equivalent) to even consider the application.
And personally, since I've been working for 3 years for this BB, the processes, familiarity all make me want to continue here for FO.
Any help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance for your advise/help :)
This might be the last think you want to hear, but it sounds like you may need to be a bit more patient. Since senior management informed you that you would be offered a FO internship when the opportunity arises, I would be hesitant to potentially step on any toes and potentially circumvent whatever process there may be by cold emailing an ED. Is there a contact in senior management that you can check in with from time to time to display continued interest in a FO internship and to also ensure that your name remains top of mind?
In the meantime it wouldn't hurt to network around your firm to learn about other groups and to also see if what group may have an opportunity for someone in your situation. Again though I would be careful since senior management seems to have taken an interest in you and is looking to help, although likely not at the speed that you would hope for.
Thanks bud, you got it completely right. I understand the risks of stepping on my toes. However, the impatience drives me crazy sometimes and I feel that I'm losing the most youthful and energetic years of my life to back-office. So I tried to keep my pieces moving.
it would be much easier for you to get a degree here first. Since FO is relatively competitive and BB has to sponsor you H-1B without really seeing you. If you have opt or stuff, its def better.
