Bad experience with my boss... HR might have made it worse... What should I do?
I was hired at my firm as a analyst II over 2 years ago. My group liked me, but my boss did not. On my first day on the job, my boss told me that he didn't like me, and that I was only hired because my team had voted for me.
Throughout my time there, my relationship with my boss has been horrible. He publicly shames me, embarrasses me, marginalizes me, threatens me, and does everything in his power to make my experience there horrible. As a result, I own up to not putting forward my level best work, and I typically only stay for 20-30 minutes longer than required.
Due to stress from work, and a family situation, I suffered from anxiety so severe that I had to take a 3 month medical leave. I had digestion issues, couldn't sleep, and panic attacks.
Upon returning, my boss has made my life even worse. As a result, I went to HR. He striped me a lot of my responsibilities, and he told a colleague who sits next to me that he was going to start a paper trail to get me fired. He yells at me for stupid things such as word choice or my attire for 20 minutes everyday. I honestly don't want to be there. and I am putting in the bare minimum right now. I have to take a xanax to get through the day there, and that has hurt my performance lot.
I updated my resume this weekend and I am sending it out. I am wondering if I should email HR about changing me to another group for the time-being as I don't want to be there any longer, or if I should just quit and look for a new job, or just wait and see how this plays our with my boss.
I have also thought about going to my boss and trying to reach an agreement with him. Essentially I tell him to give me a warning, and if I don't improve by a certain date, I have to leave the company, but during that time he cannot make my life difficult or threaten me (he has even told me he could beat me up)... I don't think making a deal with the devil is a good idea, but it could buy me 1 months time to get a new job.
You have to learn how to not let people bully you because this situation may arise again. Some bosses are very passive aggressive and others are more vocal, like this shit head you're dealing with. Working for either sucks, but you need to let him/her know not to push you around. File HR complains; try sitting away from your boss; look for work elsewhere, etc. I'm amazed you made it 2 years in such a hostile environment.
Thanks. For the time-being, should quit, ask HR for a group relocation, or have him fire me (at least I get severance)?
I would sit away from him/her and just focus on getting your work done. Record any altercations and present any hostile encounters to HR. At the same time, lock down a role elsewhere.
Jesus, what is wrong with that guy? This sounds like outright hostility. Especially the part about beating you up, couldn't you use that with HR?
It started as small bullying, which I ignored, and it eventually escalated to this... Apparently HR just had him attend a sensitivity training workshop... They haven't provided me any other updates.
Make sure you record it on tape
