OP here. In case helpful, received the offer call this morning.
Would be leaving a well-regarded bank (GS/MS/PJT/EVR) as a first year analyst so curious to hear anyone thoughts about pros / cons of making the switch
What makes you want to leave? Do you think the reverse (ie. MBB to top bank) would be possible?
I think MBB to Banking is possible but I’ve seen many many more people do banking to MBB. Reasons for leaving are:
1) don’t like the people / culture of my group very much and feel an extremely strong fit at Bain
2) think like 5% of banking work is interesting / a lot of learning whereas from talking to folks it seems like a much higher percentage of consulting work is interesting
3) ability to work on one project at a time with one team and really focus vs. trying to keep your head above water on 2-4 things at any time
4) not as sold on PE as I was before banking. Consulting likely opens a lot more doors to cool industry exits - I did a personal “research” project looking at where C-level folks in big Consumer and Retail companies started their careers - for those that didn’t start in the industry from the outset, consulting was by far the next most common starting point (Nike CEO, Pepsi CEO, Dominos CEO, etc)
Starting FT at a boutique but struck out at Bain this past fall and am looking to lateral at some point. Wondering how the interviews were and are they similar to the undergrad process? I'm guessing you got referred?
Lucky to receive two referrals from college alumni so that helped a ton. I had actually never thought about consulting in college and only did my first case ~1 month ago so can’t shed light on undergrad vs. experienced process
OP, how was process? Was it 2 rounds, 2 people each round and just cases? Thinking of trying to lateral (also 1st year)
Yup, 2 rounds with 2 case interviews each. Very quick turnaround times between the rounds. First round was 2 30 min cases with consultant level folks. Second round was 2 45 min cases worth partner and associate partner level folks
Would you be willing to share the base salary they offered? Interviewing for experienced AC as well but unsure if I should expect new grad base or higher.
Congrats OP!! Did you end up taking it?
Yup, ended up accepting!
Congrats again!! Best of luck with the new job :)
Hey hey -- joining Boston or NYC?
Hi OP, I have an interview coming up for experienced AC. Is it possible to chat with you about your experience? No worries if not
