Balding, would you start taking propecia/rogaine?
I'm almost 26, i'm balding, whatever. I'm comfortable enough in my own skin to live with it if there isn't a safe / affordable alternative. I hear about the side effects of propecia/rogaine which absolutely freak me out.
With all the bad news out there about those two, are there any good alternatives?
Transplant? Man that's some serious shit, I guess I could afford it but that's a big deal and I would need to do it within the next ~year before anyone really starts to notice.
Main worries are 1) it SUCKS to go bald young, 2) will get laid less (my perception at least, especially if i allow this to affect my confidence), 3) don't know how it could affect my career advancement (you hear the studies about how men with hear are more successful though i'm sure most of that is bs and there are so many other factors involved) and 4) i have an ugly shaped head, nicely covered up by my hair... not looking forward to shaving it.
From this thread "how much damage has banking done to your life" a few users (@hatting", @nuckfuts" @dick_fluid", @embiv" and @calendars") had some really helpful comments:
Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. You're probably genetically predisposed to lose your hair and this is called Androgenic Alopecia. To give a very simple explanation, your hair falls out because your hair follicles are sensitive to a hormone called DHT, which is a biproduct of testosterone.Doctors know nothing about hair loss. You should get on Finasteride or Dutasteride (a stronger version of Finasteride), which prevents your hair loss from progressing by blocking the conversion from testosterone to DHT and maybe even grow some of it back. Side effects are very rare if you have read some of longer studies - we're talking 1-2% with erectile dysfunction. I recommend you to start off with Finasteride and see how it goes, but talk to your doctor about it.
Quitting minoxidil is not necessarily going to drop you below baseline, studies shows a temporarily worsening but you'll bounce back to baseline as well.
sorry bro, he's on point on everything but the side effects part. less DHT means less cock power. there's a class action lawsuit in canada involving men who lost their erections (even viagra won't fix it) because of Propecia.
Propecia is the devil itself, it turns you into a female.
Embrace your DHT and baldness if it comes with it, a true sign of manhood.
Any kind of medication you're going to be using for life.I'm using finasteride and it stopped my alopecia.
The possible side effects are loss of libido and depression. Tbh I thought it was worth it. I risked it and nothing happened to me. It's different for each person though.
@anyone reading this: please don't take Alopecia, side-effects of the drug can be so intense (and not just erectile dysfunction). Really not worth it.
Going bald is probably the least frat thing you can do. How are you ever supposed to get laid bro?
FratLord is still trying to compensate for the fact that he's not in a top house...
Do whatever Elon Musk did for his baldness
Elon wears a hair piece, as a result I've lost a little bit of respect for him, but the guy is a straight up genius, so my opinion matters fuck all.
Lloyd Blankfein is so bald that even the parts of his head that are not meant to be bald are bald or balding, but it didn't stop him - that's real confidence, so he's the fucking man.
At the end of the day, by the time we are 50, 2/3rds of us will be bald or very visibly balding; the remaining 1/3rd comprises of 1/6th manlets who don't produce enough DHT and 1/6th lucky sons of bitches.
So 5/6ths of us are fucked sooner or later; all that you see today is fleeting brah.
Yea I'm a proponent of the Lloyd school of thought. Once it starts to thin that bad just do a #2 all around, I hate getting haircuts twice a month, being only able to go on weekends when the barbers are the most crowded. So balding has some upside I guess haha
From what I've heard Propecia makes you keep and even regain your hair however this is limited to balding that starts in the crown of your head not receding hairline. Rogaine mostly stops or at least slows the balding bit again mostly in the crown of your head.
There is a laser helmet which is FDA approved but I think looks silly to wear but supposedly works. There is also topical hair fibers which you shake like a salt shaker on your coverage areas, hear this works but is not a fix just a cover up.
The downsides to Propecia are 1-2% erectile disfunction and foggy brain. Some of these 1-2% still have problems after stopping taking Propecia. Also while studies have shown that smaller prostate cancers are lessened by the drug that larger cancers increase in size.
Rogaine can cause rapid heartbeat and itchy scalp.
A laser helmet makes you look like a doofus.
The only sure fire way to regrow hair is transplantation. It costs anywhere from $2k-$15k, and is permanent. You will never have the former lustrous mane of your youth but it allows some dignity to be kept.
Personally, the back of my head is thinning and I will opt for hair transplant within 2-3 years and I take rogaine to slow the loss.
The lase helmets you can buy are both ridiculously overpriced and have too few lasers to really do anything.
Look up something called the "laser messiah". There's a guy out there who buys the diodes from China and has published an assembly guide if you want to do it yourself. If you have him do it he'll make one with 450 diodes for about a grand.....by contrast your typical one made by a device company has 80 diodes for the whole head (not enough to do much) and costs $800.
And for usage you do 20 minutes * 3 times a week.....at home. Who care if it looks stupid if you never wear it out?
.
Or you could just wear a hat...
a Fedora Hat ;)
What do you wear to work? A trucker hat? Or your boyfriend's G-string? Plebe.
Go away. Disappear.
Hey See Note,
get on finasteride.
Been on finasteride since i was 21. Best decision ever... and yes my dick works
I don't want cancer when I'm 40. That's my only qualm when testing new drugs. Took a relatively new drug before that ended up severely damaging my liver and stomach.
I agree with this wholeheartidly
Just get a hair transplant
How about you just man up and worry about more important things?
embrace the bald. lots of dudes have a weirdly shaped head (not everyone has a smooth dome like tyrese or MJ). I've been going bald since 19, noticeable difference in female attention when I went to a buzzcut, even more when I just said fuck it and went straight razor.
that being said, I'm married and maybe they smelled a competitor's scent, but either way, if you look good otherwise (dress well, good posture, in shape) but just have a buzzcut to somewhat mask your balding, and a woman turns you down because of hair, that's not a broad you want anyway dude.
it doesn't have to be so drastic. You can go high and tight.
The other thing I recommend is getting your hair cut by someone who knows what they are doing, and yes this will cost upwards of $50 bucks a pop.
I think I'll go for Karl Pilkington's look in Derek. I betcha he gets more ass than the two of us combined.
Never been a fan of the high and tight. Get one of those crew cuts that cops get.
And yep...women definitely seem to like it, but that requires you to have some upper body mass to work with to get a positive reaction.
Completely agree with thebrofessor. Girls will probably take note of how you carry yourself over whether you have hair. Ever look at people on the streets? You can easily spot this with confidence - even if it's not true confidence - just by their posture (chin up, not afraid to make eye contact, chest and shoulders up and out, etc.).
It fucking sucks to go bald. But as the brofessor mentioned, a young stallion with a horseshoe (no pun intended) looks ridiculous compared to a shaved head. People will get used to your look either way as they get to know you, but at least one looks intentional.
I'm probably within two years of shaving my head. Probably going to offset the scalp with a beard. Obviously but looking forward to shaving the head but interestingly I'm not nervous about trying new styles (w beard, w goatee, etc..). Your look is a chalkboard. You can always change it if you don't like it.
And maybe one day I'll look into a transplant. I got a full Bush of unwanted hair down there... Just makes sense to relocate it.
It's called a "Power Donut" aka the Terry Bradshaw
WTF, you serious about that transplant thing? Thought it would be a measure of last resort. My concern is that I haven't got enough down there too. Could be a testosterone issue, thanks to past medication. Some of these drugs really screw you.
Lol I'm not going to take hair from my ball fro. But I would consider a transplant. I am still holding out for a new cure as well
Transplants are pretty cheap these days. The hard part is waiting the 8-9 months for you to regain all your hair (all they do is graft bulbs into your scalp-you still have to wait out the growth process).
That said, Rogaine worked for me really well for about 3 years. 20 bucks a month on Amazon. It stopped my balding dead in its tracks and i saw SOME regrowth-but you have to use it everyday. Then I got on propecia, which is even more effective.
If you can combine the two w/ a hair transplant you'll have a full head of hair well into your 50s
It's funny the kind of problems people have. I have the exact opposite problem--my hair grows abundantly...on virtually my entire body. I've spent maybe $5,000 or so over the last 2 years on laser hair removal.
Just spend the money on the transplant. Even though I could afford laser hair removal, I waited 10 years to get it done. Once I got it done my confidence SOARED and it left me wishing I had done it sooner. The same thing with weight loss--I spent a decade fat and hairy. After losing the weight and getting my hair under control my life changed. Don't waste your 20s wishing and telling yourself you'll do it later. Go fcking do it RIGHT NOW. NOW. Not later this year. Right fcking now. Make an appointment first thing in the morning tomorrow for a consultation.
Willie Robertson, that you?
FWIW, I was on Finasteride, but hated the side effects of it. Lost a lot of my hair around 24-29. Had a nasty fog/side effect kick in a few times and I stopped completely.
I hated the libido effects but the rod works when it is called upon. I won't be on any drugs or use any other means anymore, the medications screws me up and I feel nauseated half the time.
Just eat healthy, dress well, and carry yourself (as others posted). You will be fine. The clean, neat appearance will get their attention, how you talk to them will determine what happens afterwards. Big plus if you workout too.
Screw the damn surgery, I'll just save my cash and put it towards my savings/future down payment for a nice house/condo.
Just shave that shit son don't be a pussy, buzzcut master race
An FYI for the hair transplant. Most doctors don't recommend it until you hit 30-35 depending on the severity of the loss.
Not something I will ever have to worry about. my great grand father died at 105 with a full head of hair.
that's 1 of 5 male forefathers; what about the others?
Pretty much the same. My moms grand father was balding in his 90s but other than that pretty much nothing to worry about.
I'm 27 and been taking propecia since I was about 21. It works, and it works well. It is the same strength as aspirin so quit freaking out and just get some. Instead of rogaine, buy some generic minoxidil 5% from Amazon and apply it every night (it is the main ingredient in rogaine at a fraction of the cost).
There is another option. PRP hair loss treatment. This saved my life. The results are actually unbelievable. Luckily for me my fiance is a nurse injector and I get the treatments for free.
Anything to help you stop or reverse hair loss will result in a loss of sex drive (to some degree). Would not recommend unless you aren't sexually active or old.
This is so dead wrong. Do not pay this nonsense any mind.
This is not wrong, a lot of the products offered to combat hair loss come with a degree of effect on libido. DHT is a very powerful hormone. If we're talking about hair loss from stress, then that's a different matter.
I'd recommend propecia and just wean yourself onto it (1 pill per wk, 2 pills per wk, etc. until you're taking it every other day or every day. When I first started I got some pretty bad side effects because I went straight onto it, but by doing it this way I have none. I also take it with zinc which prevents any sexual side effects and doesn't turn your testosterone into estrogen (so added benefit at the gym)
Wait what?!! so without it it turns test to estrogen?
I've heard that when you block test from turning into DHT, it turns some (usually a small amount) test into estrogen and zinc or some other supplements somehow block that process.
Stop worrying about such trivial, shit if you don't pull cause you've lost your hair it's your fault you let it get to your confidence, I have a mate with horrendous alopecia and he fucks some top notch girls, doesn't let it get to his head, he's super confident.
I'm 21 and I'm receding and I couldn't give a fuck hahah.
Get married quickly, then!
hahaha, yeah what % of marriages happened early because of this... or on the opposite end women getting married before they gain that late 20's / early 30's weight
yes, time is working against you and women.
Wow, this is probably the first youtube ad I've ever watched all the way through. I looked up this product and it gets really solid reviews. I've never heard of anything like this.
https://www.amazon.com/Caboki-Hair-Loss-Concealer-90-day/product-review…
thanks for the feedback guys, appreciate it, decided to try finasteride but if i see any side effects going to look into something else
(Un)fortunately, I have the opposite problem. 6 foot tall, very athletic (swimmer, runner, etc). 28 years old.
But everyone thinks I am 18-19 years old.
