BAML in Charlotte
After looking through the forum there aren’t very many recent post about BAML Charlotte. I do not have many contacts within IBD or capital markets but was curious if anyone knows what groups are in charlotte.
I know 5 years ago they had a strong LevFin group there and I believe RE coverage is there. I could be wrong.
Thanks, I lived a year in Charlotte and trained with the whitewater Olympic Team and would love to get a chance to go back.
The Charlotte LevFin group has been gutted. Lots of spots (relatively) at Wells and some MM / boutiques though
Are there groups left at BAML, thats interesting.
I feel like real estate, of FIG could be solid in Charlotte with less expense than nyc. Maybe I’ll start my own BB IB, can’t be that hard, right?
To my knowledge it's really just some remnants of the LevFin team. A lot of the senior people (Director and up) left to other banks (i.e. SunTrust), or moved internally within the bank. Think there's still some junior guys there but not many. Pretty sure a few of them moved to NY as well.
Basically the co-head of the group that was CLT based ended up getting to oversee the whole group and moved to NY. When he moved to NY, the folks in CLT weren't really protected any more and the shift started to happen to almost exclusively NY.
There's also some investment grade debt / rates people on the floor in CLT, but don't think there's any RE or FIG. If I were focused on Charlotte IB today, I probably wouldn't be focused on BAML.
It's possible the above is no longer correct, but I'm like 85% sure it is
Had a few rounds at SunTrust on their corp banking side, they got some BAML people there as well.
To speculate, I'd imagine Charlotte is mostly Back/Middle office and vanilla commercial banking.
Can attest to statements made above. Charlotte BAML is really on a tough spot now mostly because internal shifts and high turnover. BAML Charlotte used to have a very strong LevFin group but recent changes have impacted the group in a negative way. With all these being said, the LevFin group is still a decent group just not as good as it once was. BAML also has Asset Backed Finance group in Charlotte but from what I heard, many are also relocating to NYC.
Not much left in Charlotte at BAML. Wells has a big presence, then you've got Jefferies, SunTrust, Piper, Sagent, Lazard MM, Blackarch
BAML Desks: NYC vs. Charlotte (Originally Posted: 05/03/2010)
Can anyone give me the breakdown on which desks are located where? Particularly interested in: - FX/Rates - Commodities (maybe Houston) - Gov/Muni Debt
Commodities (almost 100% energy) is in Houston
I disagree that they are almost 100% energy. In fact, if you look at ML's most basic commodity index MLCX (used to be MLCI, but now they only concentrate on the Xtra index and variations of it), it's 60% energy, 40% metals+grains+softs.
I am former MER and had buddies in govies and they were in new york. Pretty sure munis and rates etc are also in NYC in the new bryant park building
Does BAML have commodities guys out in Chicago?
If they do, there are very little. Most of the commodities group is out of Houston with maybe a few (3-5) in NYC.
They do maintain some index funds that have all sort of commodities in it. For the most part though, they trade crude and refined products, power, and natural gas.
FX/Rates Gov/Munis The above are in NYC.
dude, do yourself a favor and live in NYC not charlotte.
I would rather live in Angola than NYC but if I get to do something I want NYC is ok. Thanks to all those who helped.
why are you against NYC? it will almost definitely be a better professional experience.
I just don't care for the northeastern attitude and lifestyle. I have been to the city a few times and have not been very impressed. If I had the opportunity to work in Houston/Dallas, Chicago, California, even Charlotte/Atlanta/Miami, I would jump at them well before ever considering NYC. However, I will give you that the opportunities for career development are much better in New York than elsewhere and I'm willing to be pragmatic about it and work there if I have to.
equities in dallas
haha well said bearcats.
FXtrading, are there ops in Miami? I thought that town was all real estate, estate lawyers, and private money managers.

I'm a SA at BofA charlotte.... am looking for a place to live for the summer.
Does anyone have any suggestions on places to look or avoid?

Queen's is only 10 minutes (even with traffic) from uptown, and I believe rent is only around $400/month. Most interns in the Charlotte area live at Queen's, and it's a good way to meet people. I lived there two summers during undergrad. That being said, there were a number of interns who were able to rent rooms at the CityView Towers (???) last year for similar rent. The rooms are maybe a little nicer, and you could walk to work instead of driving.
I would try and get into CityView Towers, but hurry, they fill up quickly. If not, try Queens U.
