Barclays IB to PE ?
Will be at Barclays this summer. If I join full time, will I get the same looks as people from more prestigious banks? If not, I want to recruit FT to maximize my chances. What would be a significant enough jump?
I'm happy with last fund raised at 3+ billion.
The risk and the difficulty of FT IB recruiting is not worth it in my opinion. There are a select few banks where the risk/reward would be reasonable, but I still don't think it is necessary.
Barclays is a strong enough bank to get you into private equity. If you sit with one of the top groups at Barclays, then I don't see any reason to be worried. I assume you are headed to New York so the placement will vary from group to group. If you are in one of the other US offices like LA or SF, I don't think you have a reason to worry either. The LA Sponsors group places extremely well and the SF Tech group has a lot of exits into venture/growth investing.
Ultimately, the looks that you get are more dependent on other factors. Your undergrad school, undergrad GPA, test scores (SAT/ACT/GMAT), and luck are going to be more of a factor.
Let's say I have a top 50 undergrad school, a 3.8+ GPA with BA in finance and a 1400-1450 SAT and I work a Barclays; am I fucked or do I have a chance (assuming luck is on my side)
"Top 50 undergrad" will make things challenging, but assuming you're in one of the strongest groups, MM/LMM should still be achievable at Barclays.
Think Barclays is a totally fine place to be, if you love you group, stay, if not, then take a swim in FT recruiting and if it doesn't work you can always go back
Just get your return, and network casually in advance of the summer. Once you get your return hit up those same connects afterwards.
Friend of mine at Barclays regularly gets recruiters for MFs writing to him. Recently had an interview scheduled with Warburg Pincus. You'll be fine.
weird question but do you know his GPA approx?
Not sure, think he got a Merit or Distinction in his masters
A few months late, but can you share the group that he's in?

Thoughts on the best groups at Barclays for UMM/MF PE?
Power & Utilities, Sponsors, HC (lots of recent senior banker hires), Industrials (terrible culture tho) are the ones to aim for, in that order. Tech is decent, but don't know about Media & Telecom (Tech is separate from M&T). Would avoid ECM (weaker presence on the street) and LF (lack of modeling, sponsors does all). Don't know about CRG, RE and others unfortunately.
What’s wrong with the culture in industrials? Long hours?
Thanks! That's what I've heard so far. Not really interested in P&U or NatRec, so Sponsors and HC are top choices for me. Do you have any insight on the hours in HC? I know most HC groups are sweatshops.
On another note, is there any way to see some objective data on the best groups at Barclays instead of just learning what people have to say? I know league tables are good for banks overall, but is there something similar for group specific stuff?
