Barclays Tech? Thoughts?

Recruiting for SA 22 right now & my school has an alumni in the group. Recently talked to them and they seemed nice. Any WSO insights on the group? Obviously it's not Qatalyst or something, but any insight is appreciated

bump - according to wso, the culture in nyc tech is pretty bad and sweaty, is this still true with the new head moving from CRG? also talked to analysts from the group and they all seem very nice

none of the Barclays groups have toxic culture like the stories of some banks you read about on WSO. Tech is known to have bad hours, but most of the coverage groups will be pretty bad since they all have good deal flow. more dependent on fit, but wouldn't avoid any groups at the firm.

Bump -- what are exits like? How is the dealflow verticalized?

Top group at the firm and a reputable group on the street after GS/MS as it continues to gain market share.

Hours are a function of how busy it is, and all coverage groups are busy esp with in house M&A within each coverage.

Barclays tech has had a significant turnaround over the past couple of years. Used to be known as a pitch sweatshop. Now a top group within software, payments, and other verticals. NY group is particularly good. Just today, was announced they're serving as exclusive financial advisor to Thoma Bravo on the QAD deal.  Not a lifestyle group, but can't really think of any strong tech group that is. Impressive exits, strong junior culture, and obviously get the in house M&A and protected Saturdays that all Barclays groups do.

Agree on the turnaround but definitely not "top". GS and MS could run circles around them in any vertical and I haven't even mentioned Q or JPM.

But perhaps Barclays tech is in the running for the best of the rest

I'm an analyst at barclays. I went through the group placement process and networked with the tech group. Ultimately chose to sign with a different group but I liked the tech group overall. All the analysts are really friendly and down to earth. I could definitely see myself working with them late at night and they seemed like fun people. However, they were very upfront with the fact that they work a lot and it can get very busy. One of the analysts I talked to mentioned some recent exits from the class before him, and he rattled off some big names (I specifically remember Carlyle being mentioned). It does seem like they are one of the 2 groups that work the most (the other being industrials), but I think if you're really interested in tech and you don't mind working more than other coverage groups at barclays, then Barclays tech would be a solid option.

For me personally, I just didn't think the hours were worth it when there were more highly regarded groups with better hours.

Any updates on this group? How does it compare to other tech groups in nyc?

All I can say is that the tech at Barclays is horrible, IT is ok but Jesus Christ everything is so slow and it stakes forever to boot up the VDI sometimes and it's just a mess, very unfortunate given the bank itself is a great to place to work at, but the tech is horrendous

Huge issue with multiple BBs, with not much improvement since the start of the pandemic which is ridiculous
