BB IB -> Corp Strat -> Buyside?
I'm a 3rd year analyst at a BB and my plan going into banking was to eventually make the move to PE after my analyst program. However, after recruiting through my 1st and 2nd year I wasn't able to land a position. I am thinking about interviewing for some corp. strategy roles with a few of the larger firms (Amazon / Disney / Google). Does anyone know if taking this career path will still leave me with the optionality to try recruiting for PE or potentially HF roles after a year or two in a strategy role?
Thanks!
I unfortunately am probably not qualified to answer your question, but would be interested in hearing your background. Would you mind elaborating on the group you're in, the tier of BB you're at, and if you're NYC/non-NYC?
For what it's worth, I doubt corporate strategy would be a pipeline into PE/HF but certainly into consulting or B-school, but then again I am just an incoming analyst, so what do I know?
I'm in NY at a "tier 2" BB. I'm thinking that I may have to eventually go the B-school route to get another shot at recruiting
Not sure how that would help you? Not to be a dick, but if you aren't able to land a gig from a BB, why would going to corp strategy which is an uphill battle to place from, position you any better than being in a group that is actively targeted for buyside opps? Not sure I follow your logic here?
Frankly I'm a bit burnt out from banking at not looking to stay on as an associate so I thought it may make sense to do something else in the interim. I agree that this will likely be an uphill battle but wanted to see if anybody has looked to make a similar choice in the past
I imagine it would be quite a bit difficult to get into PE through a structured process at this point assuming you move into Corp dev/strategy, but this is just my view. You may be able to break in through uncoventional means, though this isn't necessarily typical.
Are you aware of what may have been the issue during your structured PE recruiting cycles? Do you think you might be able to land something off cycle between now and when you want to make a potential move?
To be honest, I may have been a little too picky during the on-cycle process and when I was first speaking with HH and that limited the number of interviews I had. During the off-cycle processes that I had, I did manage to make it to a number of superdays but things just didn't workout. Most of the feedback I got was that I was good but just got beaten out by someone slightly better?
I see. I'm sorry to hear things didn't work out for you. I think coming from a mid tier BB that you'd probably have had a strong shot at lower MM/MM PE funds with adequate preparation, but even then I feel like the process is a crapshoot with so many factors that are out of your control. It's just a different animal from banking interviews in all respects.
I would probably suggest networking lower/middle market firms, reaching out to alumni or thereabouts to see what's out there. It may not yield fruition immediately, but I think you should be in a good position if/when an opportunity opens up. If it doesn't, I still wouldn't be discouraged, as corporate strat/dev is still an outstanding opportunity, and allows for progression without an MBA or entry to a top MBA. You might even find that you end up liking the overall work and quality of life you get from the role and end up wanting to progress long term :)
