BB Investment Banking Summer Internship Advice
I started this week, and my staffer just doesn't have any work to give me. I ask my analysts, associates, even today asked one of the VPs for work and they all say, "oh let me think and I'll get back to you". Every assignment I've been given I complete it, and turn it in and have been only getting positive feedback. Am I doing something wrong??? How should I go about actually learning/getting work lol
build a model. start trading at work. leverage that to quant HF
It may be a relationship-based thing. I may be completely off base depending on your firm/group/etc, but try getting well-integrated. Don't waste time doing this – start tomorrow, otherwise your impression will be solidified. Return offers go to those who are socially integrated and added some value to a decent-sized deal.
All the best.
I've gone out for drinks 50% of the time since I've been with the team and we get along fine. I don't feel socially excluded, just work excluded.
Okay. Do you notice any common characteristics among those who are included in work? Or those who are not? May take a critical eye/honest assessment.
If it's a BB, they have a pretty standard process for distributing work amongst the summers. Just sit back and learn as much as you can (reading industry news, looking through models, etc.) while waiting for your next staffing.
Review recent decks for the teams you are staffed on, learn what's the client ready books look like
Not in IB, but best advice I can give for spending time wisely when nothing to do at work, is to go into document folders on previous material and just read up and expand your knowledge.
This happens. Work will come - just enjoy your down time and try to look busy learning stuff. Also, just a pet peeve, but don't say you "turn in" work once you're done. You are a professional now, not a student turning in an assignment.
Trade some stocks in your direct industry of practice, you will quickly become recognized and make a name for yourself. It is even more helpful to trade stocks for companies that are currently engaged with your group. Best of luck!
and remember to tell your family and friends all about those stocks
Yeah, if you work at a bank that allows you to trade stocks in your industry coverage area - good luck to the compliance department, hello field day for the SEC.
wow............. can you say that again? Just the way you said it
10/10
Welcome to IB - sometimes there's just downtime. Enjoy it.
If you end up working full time in banking, someday you'll look back on this post and laugh while you're attempting to dodge your staffer 24/7
