If you work in S&T at a BB, more likely than not, you're a sales trader. While this requires you to still be technical, a lot of it is being articulate and like-able. This is where those silly interview questions come into play as they require you to come up with an articulate and thoughtful answer to a relatively open-ended question. Prop shops are purely trading and, depending on the complexity of the product you trade, can require you to have a very advanced mathematics/CS background. BBs are looking for more well-rounded people, while prop shops are more looking for pure quant talent.

 

So your saying a BB S&T role would most likely be more about sales than market making? Definitely understandable when viewed in the context of all the recent post-crisis regulation.
