BB Summer Associate Recruitment in Hong Kong

Hi there,

Just got into MBA program and start to think about BB Summer Associate next year in Hong Kong (I'm a Mandarin native speaker). I talked with a couple of friends and alums and there are my two key findings so far.

1) BB Summer Associate recruiting in Hong Kong emphasizes pre-MBA background. Only candidates who have a "finance background" (Big 4, Investment Banking, Private Equity, etc.) can pass.
2) Target schools for BB Summer Associate are: M7+Tuck+Stern+LBS. Only kids from those schools could have a shot.

Can any insider shed some more light on that?

Thanks!

I go to a top 15 MBA program (not one of the ones you listed), and we have historically sent people to bulge bracket banks in Hong Kong. Not a ton, but it definitely happens so I think that the statement “you only have a shot coming from these schools...” is false.

Looking back, these kids do tend to have a strong accounting/finance background, but I don’t know if that’s a requirement or not.

  1. I don't think is an issue. Banks are far more concerned about being sharp and your pedigree than a finance background. Our HK BB offeree didn't come from a finance background. However, you need to make up for it. The guy who got the offer also came from a highly regarded US school and had brand name work experience

  2. There aren't a lot of slots for summer internships in HK. This may simply be because of the top candidates coming from those schools. I doubt they'd pass over someone from Yale SOM or Haas just because they're not from the schools listed above.

believe at asso level bbs in hk prefer those without ibd or pe background. they prefer candidates from corporate finance or big 4 more as those have decent skills and knowledge but they didnt defect from ibd. if u quit ibd once to do mba, how could u convince people u are staying for long as an asso recruit. this is very different from analyst recruit. however, internship experiences u had in ibd certainly helps
