Being a real man

I'm not sure I've ever created a topic on this site. I mostly comment on other's ideas while drunk. Good news--I'm currently inebriated, so I'm not breaking stride.

Today I want to talk about Chadwick Boseman.

What a gentleman. Be like him.

I dislike the current protest movement. Black Lives Matter misses the point.

Chadwick Boseman makes a point. He was a real life super hero. He got sick and he never told anyone. If you're wondering what makes a man a man--it's that thing. It's the ability to shoulder tragedy without complaint.

Most people (me included) aren't really a paragon of society. Men aren't meant to be performative cosplayers. Heroes are meant to be stoic.  I think they're meant to be stoic.

Before today, I didn't give two shits about Chadwick Boseman. Today, I have a completely different level of respect for him precisely because he lived his life without complaint even in his worst of times.

Respect.

I agree with most of your post. However, publicly fighting cancer doesn't make you less of a man. In fact going through chemotherapy is one of the bravest things a human can endure ..

There's no heroism in quiet suffering. You shouldn't complain, but it's not heroic either. Sometimes shit sucks and you deal with it and that's that.

Like this guy's M.O. was clearly to progress black cinema. He did that to the best of his abilities and complaining about being sick for 4 years wouldn't have helped him do it. He was doing fine without the pity card. Not a card that had to be played even if it could have been. People get praised these days for just not being attention whores.

There is content in this topic to like and dislike.  I agree with @goldencinderblock in that suffering silently does not make one a hero.  It is a personal decision and I respect that decision.  With that said, it is sometimes very admirable to be public about an illnesses, especially if you can raise awareness about measures you can take to try to prevent the illness.  For example I think Katie Couric was very public about her husband’s experience with colon cancer. Another example would be Lyle Alzado when he was public about his illness and how steroids may have contributed to it.

42 is one of my favorite movies because I am a fan of baseball and civil rights.  I do not buy many movies but I bought this one and have watched several times.  I was sad to find out that he died and at such a young age.  I wish his family the best.

@financeabc

I guess I see some value in raising awareness.. I guess. Sorta. But not really. Awareness for who? And what's that gonna do? Optimally, is the entire public walking around "aware" of every malady that exists? There's a lot of them. When are people gonna watch netflix? And what good does that do? So when somebody has Disease X, they can tell people and use it as an excuse for inadequate performance or behavior? Not OK. Handle your shit or stay home. To fund research? Like I guess, but I feel like most dollars that were gonna be donated to science were going to be donated (probably to science) already. So you're promoting the taking of funds from the mouth of one disease and into another? For what? Are you so aware of every disease that you've concluded this particular one is worth pumping up? Do the people with this particular disease contribute disproportionately beneficially to society?

Personally, anecdotally, hate me for this view whatever I don't care, but I hate when people play pity cards. I have some pity cards and I never ever play them. What's that gonna do for me, my family, and the world? I'm bipolar. Shit sucks, whatever, I live with it. I talk about it zero percent of my time and I think about it like sixty. Between bipolar and chronic pain, that's legit like 60% of my mental energy at all times. The only people who know are you anons and my wife. And I try to not even talk to my wife about it because if the person you're talking to can't relate, you're just venting on some female shit, not actually talking. So go write in a journal. And fuck your underdog story and the horse it rode in on too bro. You're on this podcast to talk about real estate, not how you used to smoke too much weed in high school and you got sad once when your dog died you fucking schmuck. This does not make the shit you have to say any more meaningful but rather establishes you as a pandering cunt. Like how come I got the single mom immigrant story, health issues, chronic pain for 12 years now, jails, hospitals, psych wards, rehabs, all that shit. Dude as far as life on Earth goes, I still had it super fucking easy because America is life on EZ mode. And guess what. Nobody knows dick. Look at me, neighbor. I'm a fucking successful straight white male with a solid deadlift. Obviously everything was handed to him because life in America in 2020 is so hard there's no way somebody could have overcome some shit and done it anyway. Doesn't matter whether life was handed to me or I've been on some sisyphus shit my whole life. Matters not at all. All that matters is what you see in front of you.

Last thing I gotta say - Dude died by the side of his family. They knew. Just cause someone doesn't use their platform to announce to as many people as possible that they are struggling with something does not mean they are keeping it a secret. Maybe it's just nunyafuckingbusiness

A lot too think about, I think GoldenCinderblock raises some very good points, especially about raising awareness. I disagree where he says complaining about being sick for 4 years wouldn't have  progress black cinema. I think if Boseman had mentioned that he were sick with cancer during filming and at the release of the film, it would've catapulted the heroism of the black panther to another level. Either way it's admirable, especially with today's typical celeb.

I agree with you, brotherbear. People spill their problems because they are looking for sympathy points. They do this hoping to find somebody else to shoulder the burden with them. We all have our own problems.

This isn't some toxic idea about bottling up your feelings and suppressing. It's as simple as taking what life throws your way, not bitching about it, and moving on.

So because Chadwick Boseman was private about his cancer that means black ppl should stfu about racial grievances in other to be real men like him? Just trying to understand your thought process here because that's how it reads.

And, it's extremely disrespectful to use his name to push your anti-BLM agenda, btw.

Lol racial grievances... aka an excuse to loot, riot, and murder.

Yeah, the black lives matter does comment not seem to fit in with the rest of the topic. Here is what we know about his views here:

  1. He does not like the black lives matter movement.
  2. You are a hero and a real man if you suffer in silence.

The real take away from Chadwick's passing is that, life isn't infinite.

I mean, this guy had it all, everything...family, money, fame (at a young age), literal praise for being Black Panther (a role he would have likely played for more than a decade); (aside from the cancer he had) image how he felt when that movie came out.

And in the end, something got him. As cool as it was to have all those things (aside from his family), he would probably give it up to have more time.

You go on this forum everyday and people "think" they would give a kidney/their left nut to get into IB/PE/MC so they can stun on some teacher/dude from high school and buy a shitty expensive watch; at the end of the day we're all lucky to be alive. Esp at this time; you can make $50k a year and almost have the same lifestyle as a guy making $500M (relatively). We all have air conditioning, eat whatever food you want year round, entertainment. At the end of the day, be thankful for what you have.

PS- being a man doesn't mean holding things inside; being a man means discussing them. I think what people meant above was Chadwick was willing to put that aside and didn't want to spin a "whoa is me" tell; that's being a man. ie; yea, its sucks I'm in this situation, but a man figures out a way to get himself out of that situation.
