Berkeley vs ND (Mendoza)
Hey everyone, I was just wondering what the consensus is between these two schools.
Berkeley is 35k/year cheaper for me because I'm in state.
I would graduate ND with around $60k dollars and debt and no savings.
With regards to culture, I think that Notre Dame fits me a lot better compared to Berkeley. I'd no doubt be happier at ND. I do want to end up in NY (San Fran to a lesser degree), so that could be a factor.
Generally speaking, is the 35k a year extra worth it for the ND network/advantage (or disadvantage, let me know) compared to Berkeley?
Thanks!
I'd have about 60k in debt, use around 20k in personal savings, and work an on-campus job all four years. My parents would be willing to support me (for the most part) the rest of the way. They would be willing to support essentially a little over what the UCs would cost.
If you worked or pursued internships while attending Cal you could boost your savings from $20k to $30k. That's a lot of breathing room for a fresh graduate with no debt and an excellent education.
Go to Cal. You're paying in-state tuition for a world class education; it's a no brainer. You'll fit in just fine in Cal as it's big enough that you'll have no problem finding your niche and fitting in with people you like.
Cal easily. Like the user above said, one of the best universities in the world at a discount. ND is a great school, but it's not Cal.
Cal is better and cheaper
ND alum here, full disclosure. I'd take ND in a heartbeat. The experience at the school was incredible, and the network has helped me every step of the way in my career. Cal is great, of course, but I think the experience at ND can't be replicated. It's not for everyone, but if you like the culture from the outside, you'll love it once you're there. As an aside, ND to NYC is about as common as going to Chicago after school, so you'll have a lot of potential connections there.
