Bernie Madoff...- back in business?
When thinking of Ponzi schemes, Bernie Madoff is the first name sure to come to mind. in 2009, Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison for numerous fraud charges. Now according to CNBC, Madoff is asking for his sentence to be shortened from the president (which means he could potentially get out free alive). An unrelated interesting fact is that over 75 cents to the dollar of the claims brought against Madoff have been recovered.
Madoff currently is 81 and has served 10 years in prison.
Do you think his sentence deserves to be reduced? Should he live to see the day he is a free man? Also politically what move should Trump make regarding Madoff?
My opinion is that I think Madoff should be set free in the next couple years because he only has a few years left of his life anyways. Due to the high amount of damages that has been recovered, he is probably remorseful about what he did as well. Let the man enjoy a couple years. It's not likely he would actually go "back in business" since everyone already knows his name.
I know my argument of course could be countered and looking to see what thoughts you all have.
P. S. I can't post the specific link due to my # of posts but just search "Bernie Madoff CNBC" in google and you should get it. The article only came out a few days ago.
Dont piss off rich ppl
This dude orchestrated the largest ponzi scheme in history, ruined peoples lives with the money he stole. 75c on the dollar 10 years later means plenty of people lost the money they earned for 10 years, and still havent made it all back. What if I stole millions and gave it back to you 10y later? Would you want me to go live it up? And even if you disagree on these points none of this is even as big as the fact that he kept it from his family too. His son killed himself on the 2 year anniversary of the whole ordeal. He stole decades from his own son, I dont think he deserves a couple years back. Maybe I sound absolutely crazy but all I'm saying is if it were my choice, he stays put right where he is.
meant to reply to OP my b
No, he needs to stay in prison. There is no benefit to letting him out. Hopefully he dies there.
It's because of people like him that we have so much regulation now.....
Keep him there. I would actually be surprised if Trump was stupid enough to shorten his sentence, even with all he has done so far.
Never underestimate how stupid Trump can be...
No
So far some decent points have been made. One question I do have is whether you think any political party would gain beneficially by releasing Madoff? (i.e extremely left parties)
Kim K's next target to get people to sympathize and try to get them out of prison?
On the next episode of This Is Reality
He's basically Red from Shawshank Redemption - "I'm known to locate certain things from time to time." Took the prison hot chocolate trade by storm and was apparently flipping cocoa powder like no tomorrow.
From MarketWatch: “At one point, he cornered the hot chocolate market. He bought up every package of Swiss Miss from the commissary and sold it for a profit in the prison yard. He monopolized hot chocolate! He made it so that, if you wanted any, you had to go through Bernie.”
