Entry level consulting out of Undergrad
I'm an undergrad (senior) at a non-ivy, good public school (non-feeder) who has a strong background and experience in biomedical research. I double majored in neuroscience and public health. Before applying to MD or PhD grad schools, I am thinking of doing a 1-2 year gig as an entry level analyst or consultant (possibly related to biotech/healthcare consulting).
Being that I have minimal knowledge in business or finance, what are my chances (do I even have any chances) of being hired as an entry level consultant? I have public health internship experience and GPA is at 3.9+.
Thanks!
Unless your public school is UC Berkeley-caliber or similar I'd say MBB is a long shot.
But Tier 2, Big 4, and boutique firms recruit at good public schools. I know of bio or public health majors with high GPAs that received full-time offers at the Big 4 in their health care practices. That 3.9+ GPA helps a lot. However, it's late in the game already a lot of firms recruit in the fall, but apply because you have a shot at getting interviews.
Probably slim to none at any of the major firms- they've already finalized their full-time hiring list and headcount budgets. Couldn't hurt to apply, though you may have more success with some boutique firms. I would look at boutique firms within the area of expertise you have and go from there.
But even if I had applied in the fall, would the fact that I have no business background (also from a non-target school) give me a chance at consulting?
Yeah, that wouldn't affect you, especially if you were going for a more niche firm.
best entry level job out of undergrad for consulting in the future (Originally Posted: 02/04/2012)
I'd like to be a consultant in the future and knowing my circumstances, my chances of getting offers from MBB are slim. However, since tier 2 firms are still an option what would be the best entry level job that I can use as a platform that will impress these firms? Should I look for jobs in smaller consulting boutiques in my city? My plan is to apply to a top MBA program after I have a few years of real world experience. Please give some ideas for entry level jobs or internships. Help a brother out.
Thanks!
ermmm..... we need more details about you. washington u, is that a semi-target?
idunno, but i hear bad things about b-school placement from boutique consultancies. have you considered investment banking? you're probably better off doing corporate strategy or F500 finance (if that's your only option) than working at an unknown consultancy.

I guess I wasnt very concise in my original post. sorry! what I meant was I would like to attract tier 2 firms (OW, ATK, Marakon, Accenture etc.) in the future. I'm not targeting MBB at all. I'm a realist.
