Best Finance jobs pre-MBA
Tried to look for a post about this topic but could not find a consolidated answer.
As a quick background, I aim to apply for top B-schools in the States for MBA (H/S/W/Sloan/the usuals) within 2-3 years, which would take the total time I have worked in my current role (only role after undergrad) to around 4 years. I have not taken a GMAT yet and would be more than happy to receive any suggestions around what time/stage in my life is the best to take the GMAT. However, for the purposes of this post, I want to focus on the job before applying for an MBA and how it would affect my chances. It would be helpful to provide my current situation to understand the situation better.
I am currently working in Risk in Asia for a top-tier bank (MS/GS/JPM). My role, which although requires a decent amount of qualitative thinking, is largely perceived as a quantitative one. Coupled with my Engineering undergrad degree, it builds up the image of a very quantitative/numbers-oriented person. I do have experiences on my CV such as captaining sports teams, debating, volunteering etc. which try and balance out that image, but I am unsure as to what degree does it affect the overall perception MBA admissions officers would have of me. While I do enjoy my current role, I am looking to transition into a new revenue-generating/FO role.
Simply from the perspective of higher MBA admission chances, what are the roles that would help give me an edge and why? For the purposes of this discussion, I am not looking to find out how easy or difficult the transition would be for me (trust me I know this bit), but simply which roles would put me at a higher stead to get into the top B-schools. As some examples of roles I could transition to, there is Sales, Trading, Structuring, Private Investments (these banks have in-house Private Eq/Credit arms), IBD, Asset Management, Private Banking or stay in my current role.
Appreciate the help!
