Discuss. Since this pertains to men's hair...I hate to say it but - I really don't want a woman cutting my hair. I usually go every 2-3 weeks.
I get all of my fancy hair cuts at FSC in the West Village. I highly recommend them for when you feel lke stepping it up a notch ($42 plus tip).

Then just go to a barber and pay the standard $12-$15 for a haircut. There are normal barbershops all over the place, but there are very few "nice" barbershops who'll actually care about your hair at that price.
(I used to scoff at paying more than $15 too.)

it's fun at night when it turns into a club, but wouldn't particularly recommend it during the day. Try fellow barber in the west village, they do reservations now online and are excellent [ask for Tim]. It's about $45. Alternatively, you can do "on the mark" barber shop on 13th and A. it's quick, dirty, and cheap $20
If you don't keep your hair in a short crew cut (there are other acceptable conservative styles) you probably want to shell out the $40.
In midtown, the place in Le Parker Meridian and Jerry's in Rock Center. Blind barber is interesting (cocktail bar out back, barber in the front) but I wouldn't get regular haircuts there.
Alternatively, get a John Allen's membership, worth it if you are actually going every 2-3 weeks and not every month,

I usually get a haircut in Chinatown. It's dirt cheap and they do a really good job. My haircut is super simple though, so if you need something on a higher level I would go to Prestige Barber Shop.
I don't care how much money I'm making, I'll never pay $40 for a haircut.
There's a great place downtown called Ray's Barber Shop, I think it's on Chambers St. $17 including tip, ask for Arsene. The guy gives a great cut.

Some people really depend on WSO for every decision.. Anyways.. it depends on your kind of hair really.. but IMO, go uptown to Harlem/Wash heights and get a haircut. Its a 15 min train ride but at least your hair wont look terrible
Try Premium Barber on 52nd and 2nd especially if you are in Midtown East. Affordable without having to take a gamble... I think it's 16 bucks.

If you are looking for a super fabulous haircut I recommend going to see Ted Gibson at his Salon in the Flatiron area. It's a bit pricey at $1,200 a cut, but well worth it!

When I was in my mid 20's in the late-'90's I partially lived in Boston. There was this barber in the old State Street building in the basement on Franklin near PO Square. There were Playboys and Penthouses to read, you could smoke cigs or buy a cigar from them. $8 for a great cut, $8 more for a straight razor shave. Find that in NYC, inflation adjusted.

Chinatown
It depends. Are you white, black or Hispanic? It matters. I've had my personal barber since high school so I'm lucky, but from experience if your black then go to a black barber, white then go to a white barber. Hispanic barbers can usually cut both. Not racist here it's just barbers tend to cut their own kind of hair the best.
Depending on the style wanted pick your spots. If you have locks of love your better off going to a salon. Just want a fade then go to someone that's great with clippers.
It's not about the shop, it's about the guy cutting. You won't know until you go and get a cut for yourself.

Go to Raphael's barber shop. Including tip it's 20 dollars, and the service is reliable. I personally get 4 on the sides and back, and I keep the top longer so that I can semi-part it. The haircuts are consistent, fast but not too fast, and they take a straight razor to the sideburns and back of the head. You almost always need a shower afterwards though because I wish they cleaned you up better or shampooed your hair.

They do a great job and give free alcohol. 'The Classic' includes shampoo, head massage, manicure, hot towel, neck massage, shoe-shine. Takes about an hour. $68 for that shit. No tip. So if you go 2x a month for 6 months retail is about $816 ... hence why tip isn't asked for nor required. Some do tip though. But I don't ball hard enough to tip. Only to get an overpriced haircut and feel good about myself.

Lambie, they normally don't buzz cut if that's what you're asking. Unless its a requirement. I'm a white dude with your standard Justin Bieber hair so I can't comment on whether they can or can't cut your Afro locs properly. They just sit me down and scissor all the way.
All the core staff is highly trained and it's NYC, so I've seen plenty of people walk through the doors of all races, shapes, and sizes. African American as well.

Favorite is Takamichi Hair on Bowery, just below Houston. ~ 80 + tip, but includes free drinks, massage, shampoo, etc. And plenty of talent catch your eye.
Used to get my cuts at Esquires.
^I got a bad haircut from On the Mark, and my haircut is as simple as they come. (4 on the sides and back, longer on top.) My sideburns were uneven and the top of my head was shorter than the sides and back. It was ridiculous. I went there 3 times in total, and I'm probably never going back.
Highly encourage you guys to join John Allens though. Unlimited shoe shines, manicures, hair cuts, beers for $800 a year. VERY good too.
Been going to Jay at Astor Hair for a couple years now, he's done my asian head well and has honed his technique to suit my hair/style. 15+5 tip from me, but there are a ton of other barbers that work there with lower demand, I'm sure they're all proficient enough to get the job done.

lol its not about the price when it comes to the haircut, its about whether barber "gets it or not." you can essentially go to some flaming shit in manhattan that'll cost you 30 bucks and odds are you'll come out looking like a hipster, or you can hit up a dude who charges 12 bucks for a cut and can nicely (and evenly) line your shit up and know how to trim your hair with scissors and shit. just common sense to me.
