Best Gyms and Workouts in NYC

Monkeys and Gorillas, What are the best gyms and workout routines in NYC?

I currently have a classpass and tried so far a few interesting gyms.
The reviews for them are below.

  1. WRKNYC (bootcamp style)

By far my favorite bootcamp gym in the entire city! 45 mins and you are sweating like an animal, so definitely a time saver for me.

  1. Five Points Academy (martial arts)

If you are really into martial arts, you should check out this gym! They have plenty of martial arts classes, including Muay Thai and even a knife class?

  1. Pace For Success (bootcamp style)

Good routines, very clean, but small gym. Gets very crowded on the weekends.

  1. Row House (rowing studio)

If you are into rowing, you should check this one out!

  1. UFC Gym (boxing)

Also, really good workout classes that incorporate elements of kickboxing!

Please add more to the list!

  1. Equinox Upper East Side (basketball)

If you are into basketball the Equinox Upper East Side (it used to be a different gym, but was bought out by Equinox) on 61st street between 1st and 2nd is pretty good. During the dark analyst years I used to go maybe a couple times a month (if I was lucky) just for pick up basketball (I hardly ever used the weight room since the gym in my apartment already had a decent weight room).

In more recent days, I have been going almost everyday for pick up basketball. Playing pick up basketball is a good workout and it's a lot more fun than running on a treadmill. Competition is a mixed bag, ranging from people who have obviously never played basketball before to ex-college players and even the occasional ex-professional (not NBA, places like Europe, etc.)

new york athletic and swim club has reasonable-ish membership prices for a good midtown location and a pretty nice full 25 yard pool - pools are hard to find in NYC i've learned

Martial Arts/Boxing

-Fidi/Downtown: The Wat(only muay thai with am classes), Circle Square, 5 Points, Church's,Underground Midtown: Coban's, Renzo Gracie BJJ, Victor Shaolin BJJ

Weights

Just do any gym that you can squat, deadlift, OHP, bench press. Keep it in the 5x5 range.

Crossfit

Can be a great way to get in shape and really nice eye candy, the black box in NoMad

Gleasons is the best bet for a real boxing gym

I know there's a stigma attached to it, but I'd really consider crossfit if your time is limited. I've been athletic my whole life and have primarily done the bro-style gym routine with basketball. That all worked fine until I got older and busier.

About 3 years ago my new job paid for gym memberships and I was getting pretty out of shape so I decided to try crossfit. I did 3-4 workouts a week for about a year and got in really good shape. I then did their Barbell Club, which is basically just powerlifting, to get stronger and got the strongest I've ever been.

In the last year I haven't been going for a variety of reasons, but I definitely have better workouts now than before my introduction to crossfit. I learned a lot and have kept some of that with me.

It's not perfect, but if you could make the gym a few times a week, I have to believe Crossfit would be one of the most effective uses of your time. I also found that it helped with Diet because you'll only eat half a pizza and then go crossfit once in your life.

if you're an athlete, sure, but I think it's hard to make a blanket recommendation when the majority of crossfitters I see (that don't compete) have terrible form and set themselves up for narcissism and injury.

the HIIT nature and emphasis on freeweights is great, but I have serious doubts that every box puts the necessary emphasis on form to avoid injury

That is true to a point. Some of the youtube stuff out there is TERRIBLE. However, I will say that I've only been to 3 boxes and the stuff you see on youtube is not what I've seen in person. I know my box wouldn't have let me continue with the workout with the crap form you see on youtube.

Like I said, I havent done crossfit in a little while. There are a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones is nagging injuries. Since I've been working out on my own I keep getting banged up. I know n=1, but I was definitely less injured while doing crossfit.

I think you definitely have to be careful. Going to a box with good trainers that emphasize good form is crucial. However, I do personally believe that the crossfit=injuries stigma is overblown. This is from my personal experience, but moreso because I believe that if anyone pushes themselves hard (like crossfit does) you are more susceptible to injuries. I have done no research to prove this, but I believe some of the crossfit injury stigma is because people are working out at an intensity level of 9 instead of 3, which will test your body harder. I'm willing to risk some more aches and pains if it's due to workout intensity; however, not due to bad programming.
